He was very much a maverick, but you'd have to stretch a long way to not consider him a conservative.

      • Maverick "genuine" conservative. A wonderful oxymoron.

What a narrow view of conservatism you must have.

We know that your view of conservatism is exceptionally broad, as it includes yourself.

We were talking about conservatism, not fascism, you wouldn't understand.

                • Because killing the black family via our war on drugs/prison+justice system does more damage.

Actually, the gap between single black mothers and single white mothers is non-existent I believe. The gap is really between black men and white men
Well, then why is it that a black man is far more likely to get involved in drugs, drug dealing, arrests, assaults, murder, etc? See, this is the problem. You attribute higher incarceration to discrimination. I attribute it to the actual rates of criminality. Black men are more likely to kill others and be killed. They are less likely to stick around and raise their children. This is contributing not just to their difficulties, but the difficulties of their children. It's a cycle.

                  • You aren't going to motivate them by failing them.
It's not intended to be motivation. It's intended to be a wakeup call. If you believe you are entitled to a pass, no matter how hard you work, then there's no incentive to actually put your nose to the grindstone. I had one student like that two years ago. I warned him at the outset that I would fail anybody who was below grade level at the end of the year. I actually had two who failed, but the one girl who failed was getting no support at home and was trying to make up for years of poor education in a year. She believed she was dumb, etc and everyone including her father thought so.

I was willing to put in extra time to help her get over the hump - but her father wouldn't permit it. That was the hardest fail I gave out. She needed the time to get up to speed with everyone else, and needed the extra year. I don't know where she is now - I hope she is doing better. I spent a lot of time with her in class trying to help her find her voice and get the confidence to speak up and do the things she never had done before.

The second student, well, he said nobody had ever failed him for not working before. He told me he didn't think I would either. I warned him and then failed him at the end of the year. I do know his mother made him go to sumer school and she even sent me a note saying thank you at the end of the year!

They need to understand that it's just not well enough to do just as well as their parents.

It doesn't sound like you really care what happens to your students. Man, if you have students that face a danger you should feel the responsibility as a teacher to try to help them.

If a parent is unwilling to pick their minor child up an hour later after class or an hour before class so I can spend some time getting her up to speed, what do you suggest I do?

I spoke with him, and laid it all out for him and he said he simply didn't care. You're right. My responsibility is to work with the kids in the time that I do get with them and teach them and help them. But I cannot force them to stay after school.

I was happy meeting with her, before class, after class, whenever. But, it's up to the parents. I can't make that call for them - and if a parent is unwilling to work with me, that leaves me precious few options.

I'm all ears as to how I ought to have handled that situation two years ago.

                        • I have decided to boycott Chick-fil-a. Since there are none in Winnipeg, this should be easy.

All I'm saying is that your POV should be that they are in a bad situation, not that they are bad kids. Kids know if you like them or not. If you don't like them they aren't going to do well just in spite of you. If they like you they will want to impress you. I know it's not the motivation that you want them to have, but they just don't care about the things you care about.
