  • Most "experienced" shooters could make a head shot from short range, but most of them haven't been under fire while doing it.

    ACK!

    • He was not carrying 6,000 rounds. There is no ****ing way. He'd have to have a backpack full of it and it would weigh like, half a ton. I have a few 525 round boxes of Remington .22LR ammo and those things weigh a few pounds. The ammo for his gun is dramatically heavier.

I can hit someone in the head with a paintball gun at close range while being shot at. Bear in mind that paintball guns are about as accurate as muskets. It's not that hard. There's a special shooting technique for handguns and very close range combat where you don't use the sights. It's fast and reasonably easy to do under stress.

Virginia and DC have very different gun laws, so no the comparison is not useful in this instance. Virginia has practically no gun laws whereas Maryland and Washington have ridiculously tight ones.

In any case, the point was to check HC's claim that his city, which is Fairfax, has less crime than London. Which it does.

        • Okay what should be happening is we concede freer gun rights didn't and wouldn't have helped the situation but liberals should not be limiting rights and changing our lifestyle because of a single incident by a crazy person. THAT is what gun rightists should be arguing. We don't let an outlier incident cause dramatic changes in our lives and reductions to our rights.

          • Right. This is a rounding error in the murder rate. The reason people flip out over it is because it happened in a white suburban neighborhood, as opposed to southside Chicago, so there is actually some token amount of crime in this country they might not be able to avoid simply by staying out of the ghetto.

You're right. This is the first time a mentally unstable American with easy access to all kinds of ridiculous weaponry chose to unleash it all on his fellow citizens.

If you live in a country where people DON'T freak out over 12 people being killed (another 11 in critical condition) and dozens more seriously injured, then that would be the time to worry.

People would still freak out of this happened in southside Chicago. It's ****ed up.

But hey, all of these deaths are worth it, right? As long as Billy-Joe can use AR-15s to go hunting, it's all worth it.

Umm... 12 murders is like the 10 day average in Philly.

                  And no one cares.

It seems to happen about once a year. Still considering how many people have guns, that's an outlier.

                    • Over the past few months Chicago has had that number of murders on a regular weekend. It's a local news story, below the fold at best.

Of course, Chicago practically bans guns.

AR-15s are almost never used in crime and we banned them for 10 years and nothing came of it.

I still dispute the notion that gun control will help, so yes, it's worth not having it.

Mr. Holmes had purchased the weapons legally at three area gun stores in the last 60 days and had bought 6,000 rounds of ammunition, Chief Oates said.

It seriously sets off no flags for someone to buy, within 60 days, an assault rifle, shotgun, TWO hand guns, and 6,000 rounds of ammunition.
I bought two pistols and a combat shotgun after my little incident, and about 600 rounds of ammo to boot.

                        Nobody blinked.

...and yes, that was a single shopping trip.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

No, you shouldn't, because Laz told me to enjoy my third-world murder rate. I don't live in DC. My town's murder rate is very low, thank you very much

Also, just because Fairfax has a high median wealth doesn't mean there aren't poor areas. Fairfax County is enormous. You can find all levels of urbanization and all levels of economic status.
