  • So apparently this guy was undergoing psychiatric care when he started buying all of his guns and ammo?

Is it not part of the process to determine if someone buying large amounts of weapons is insane and actively seeing a psychiatrist?

    • People buy in bulk. Obviously, the sellers had no reason to suspect he was in treatment. This is predicated on my belief that he didn't go and buy things dressed as Batman or a SWAT member.Who do you expect to do what? Accept the fact that even though you don't like guns, they exist. What do you suggest? What should have set off an alarm?

I suggest that they find out if he is getting treatment.

And I doubt they had "no reason to suspect he was in treatment". From all accounts he was ****ing weird leading up to the shooting. The gun club owner got creeped out enough that he forbade him from joining, no? Obviously he had some balls the others did not.

        • Well, you can't do that. The only thing that might have averted it is if his doctor thought he was a threat and reported him. A big leap for a doctor to take.
It doesn't work the other way, due to privacy. You all like your privacy, don't you? So let me ask, anyone, again. What do you want? I'm serious.
Guns aren't going away, no matter what. So help make it better. Open up the privacy standards?

          • Do you insure your guns? As part of the insurance do you record your serial #s? If your guns were to be stolden, would you report the type of gun, its serial # to your insurer and the police (a government agency)? If the police had access to a data base with your information, as well as the info on the guns you owned, does this destroy your right to privacy?

You do not have a constitutional right to own a car (correct me if I'm wrong). Your car is registered and licenced, and the police can access a data base with your information through that licence plate, correct? Cars won't go away, and outside of a few extremists on both sides of the Canada/US border, there doen't seem to be an outcry about big government intruding on our 'privacy' to own a car. Why is that? If cars can be licenced and tracked, why not guns?

            • Being in treatment means nothing. Half of America with money is in treatment for something. Unless a court finds you dangerous, no red flags go off when you buy a gun.

Yeah. That whole "use violence to steal from the rich and kill the rich" is definitely worse than the current status quo.

The point wasn't about registration, it was his mental health at question and the avenues open for dialogue.

                      • Just out of curiosity, how much would 6000 bullets weigh? I'm wildly guessing that twenty bullets or so weigh a pound, so something like 300 pounds? Assuming he got off one round per second, and had a pair of helpers with really sturdy wheelbarrows, he could use up all that in around two hours when you factor in reloading time. I think.

For .223 rounds, more like 40 but magazines will add additional weight.

I don't insure my guns. And if there were an amendment to the Constitution that protected our right to own a car, I'd fully support it.

So he'd only need one wheelbarrow-helper, perhaps.

Loading the 6000 rounds into magazines will be time-consuming as hell.
