It's nice to think about the slaves being free, but look at all the corruption, war etc... If God freed the slaves then he also makes war. This is not so.

So God is responsible for all the evil in the world, if He's responsible for any of the good?! Have you bought into the atheist argument that completely? God, through the Holy Spirit, can't work out good purposes in the world?

I don't think there is a single Christian denomination that believes this (and just about all of them believe God is against slavery and, through the Spirit and people willing to follow Him, was able to make that clear).

The Bible is decidedly anti-Empire and it is the Empire (Rome to be specific) that kills Jesus and the apostles (what, you think they were all martyred because they looked funny?). The Bible is time and again on the side of those oppressed by regimes that follow the dictates of violence and hatred. That's the whole point of Exodus and the Major and Minor Prophets. Is it any coincidence that at the Transfiguration you have Moses and Elijah (who appears in the History but struggles against the regime of Ahab) appear beside Jesus? Read your Bible!

I'm not arguing that he doesn't have ultimate authority. I'm arguing that earthly authority does not obey him.

Everything happens for good. This is God's plan. This is the best possible world that could have been created. That is all besides the fact that the evil one has power over earthly authority. But because he has power over earthly authority we know how good God is. This is God's plan.

You have missed all the political importance of Jesus being named the Messiah, the new King. Why would the Empire kill Jesus and the apostles if they weren't a threat to the Empire? According to you they did it for fun.

I thought the Catholic Church wasn't one to believe in a "Great Tribulation". As an amillenialist myself, I don't think any tribulation will be that extended (you know, for the sake of the elect the those days shall be shortened and all that).

Eschatology isn't my strong point. From what I can see in the Catechism Catholicism makes no statement regarding the universality of death, and acknowledges the possibility that some of those who will be saved will be alive at the end of the world. It does acknowledge that the period leading up to the antichrist taking over the world will be the beginning of the suffering that we and all Christians will undergo. They also teach that there is only going to be one general resurrection, where the dead who are to be judged will be resurrected along with those who are still living. Those who are dead already and judged will either be in heaven or hell. That's the big difference between Catholic and Protestant theology. The dead who are judged to be worthy are already in heaven.

Though, Elok is correct. I just think the Evangelical mindset that we are leaving this horrible place called Earth is horrible theology that leads to a belief that we shouldn't give a darn what happens to the planet because we're just leaving anyways.

CS Lewis (hardly an evangelical), asks us a simple question in Mere Christianity. "Who among us has been so loved by the world that he would want to stay?"

As counterpoint to that depressing sentiment, I once read a brief account by Met. Kallistos of a Greek priest-monk, a latter-day starets, who was enormously fond of nature. He would go for long walks in the forest and claim that God had left an Eleventh Commandment: "You shall love the trees." The story goes that, every time someone came to him for confession, he would assign them the penance of planting a tree. As he lived a long time and had many spiritual children, by the time he died fully half of a formerly-bare Aegean island was covered in forest from his penitents...
