Very few . . . but some couples, aware of a family's animosity to their partner, do take the steps (particularly on the advanced health care directive stuff). I am not "blaming the victim" but merely pointing out that in most jurisdictions they could have done the things that would have conferred legal rights.

I understand the failure to do so-- heck I would even understand the principled decision NOT to do so (with the idea that they should be allowed to marry and render other documents unnecessary)

And the way they treat women as second class citizens, which I always find humorous since they usually criticize the harsh treatment of women in other religions.

There's a difference between equality of form and equality of function. Women don't have to do exactly the same thing as men to be equal, and nor should they. Same with the men.

There are plenty of ways for women to get involved in church, and frankly, it's not the women who aren't showing up. I can count the number of young men whom I work with on one hand, one. And that's me.

Yeah, the priests and bishops did a pretty good job of tearing it down from the inside. I know you like to think catholics are the most oppressed people on the planet but most of the derision they get is earned.

That's like saying in the old days that since there were more women secretaries in a company than male bosses that women were treated equally.
What a moron.
Can women be priests? Can women participate at the upper levels? How is that equality?
How can anyone say that the RCC doesn't treat women like second class citizens?

While personally I support female pastors (I don't think there is scriptural basis to not allow it), I have had enough women (who were the dominant personalities in the I was attending church) preach from the pulpit that women should not be pastors, to feel that this issue is not one of equality.

A matter of interpretation of scripture. If you believe women should not be priests since it's ordained so by God, you have to accept that if you want to follow said God.

Yeah hide behind the curtain You FW. Many other Christian groups interpreted those same scriptures differently. So if they really wanted to treat women equally, there's plenty of wiggle room there.
The old boys in Rome just want to keep their country club all male.

I remember growing up and hearing the hints from all of our teachers (Nuns) that they wished they could contribute more by being priests.
Why should they be considered so lowly that they can't administer the sacraments.
It was sad to hear that from women that had given up so much in their commitment to an organization that treated them like second class citizens.

This was one of the major reasons why I eventually said enough.

I don't know much about Catholicism.

I am speaking from my own tradition (where women pastors is a source of conflict, often accepted in NA but not at all in Africa/etc).
