I'll say it again: there is no comparison between paying a tax and the institution of slavery.

And I say that there is a comparison between the two. Gosh. I guess it's settled then.

You are not comparing like with like, simply stating that if there is a punishment for non-payment of a tax, then it MUST be like slavery, since punishment was a feature of slavery.

I said that imprisonment for owing taxes is similar to the punishment endured by slaves and that tax enforcement is designed with the same goal, to get people to knuckle down and work and pay without 'causing trouble'. I didn't say that 'there is a punishment', no, I said, that involuntary confinement, work programs, assault within prisons, etc is similar to the treatment of slaves.

A slave lacked any fundamental freedoms. You, as a taxpayer do not. You may choose not to pay a tax, knowing full well that you may be punished. If you choose not to, you are cognisant of the likely outcome, and making use of your free will. How does that compare with someone who does not even control their own body ?

The fact that I don't have control over my body, because I have to pay a tax on money that I have earned. I don't have a say in the matter, and 'fundamental freedoms', mine can be taken away if it is shown that I owe taxes.

The state doesn't control your body- you're free to emigrate, if you don't like paying tax to Canada- or the U.S. . Before you get classed as a common thief though, perhaps you'd like to reimburse Canada for what the state spent on you.

Then perhaps Canada can stop persecuting my faith, and we'll call it even. I paid back my tuition and I owe nothing more to Canada.

That is what happens if you are the primary caregiver and you go to jail. Your kids can become wards of the state and put in a foster home.

Yes, it does. Abuse is common in prisons, and confinement takes away fundamental rights to movement. You are forced to work in work programs, etc.

Well of course I would expect most adoptions would be to couples. I never said or implied otherwise.

Then why are you arguing with me on this point, when you've conceded the main thrust of the argument? Most are couples. Why? Because children do better with two parents, and mom and a dad.

Trying to change the argument doesn't make you right.

Saying that 5 percent of all adoptions are single people doesn't change the fact that almost all are couples, and there are substantive reasons why.
