    • While I think we need to put more into education in the US, I think that KH is right about what people in america value:

"In 2007–08, the average annual base salary of regular full-time public school teachers ($49,600) was higher than the average annual base salary of regular full-time private school teachers ($36,300)."

The NCES Fast Facts Tool provides quick answers to many education questions (National Center for Education Statistics). Get answers on Early Childhood Education, Elementary and Secondary Education and Higher Education here.

Even accounting that many of the private school teachers are not accredited or are like Ben or are doing it for religiously motivated reasons, the pay is still so low compared to public school teachers.

Of course, the public school teachers average goes way up due to including special ed teachers and administrators, and without these the public school teachers salary might be much lower. This is an issue of where we spend the money and now how much is spent though.

But one day, I just said **** it, I'm going to go out and try. I did great on the written tests and when I took the physical tests I often surpassed people younger than myself. The last issue and possible deal breaker was the pay. The police pay combined with my retirement pay allow me to live in a standard that is close to what I enjoyed as a Naval Officer so I am not complaining about the pay and I enjoy my job.
        1) You did complain about your pay
        2) You're already about 300 years of economic thought behind where the discussion is at, so I'm going to stop toying with you now

My understanding is that for law school only about 1/3 actually make money off it, so unless you are pretty sure you will be part of that 1/3 I don't think it is a good idea.

The earnings you have have more utility in some uses than others. By using them for things of low utility you are just as much destroying utility as those actions you are damning others for.

The short film is done. I submitted to three local festivals in Aug/Sep time frame. It did'nt get in. I'm looking at the Atlanta Film festival now or online distribution as a web serial. Everyone who has seen the short has liked it so I know there's something there. Thanks for asking.

                • Yeah, here in California there are a whole lot of lawyers who graduated from 3rd rate schools, still passed the bar, but are only making less than $30,000 per year. That's why we have all the ambulance chasers. Law degrees are like MBA in that if you go to a top school then they're of immense value but if you go to an also ran school they not worth a whole lot monetarily. Still, if it's something that interests you or if you can get into a top school then go for it.

Public school teachers also generally work in a worse environment and must be compensated for that. Then again, private schools are free to select better teachers (both initially and subsequently through firing) and the job security in a public school is an unmeasured compensation. I'm unwilling to ascribe the entire difference between public and private educators to public-sector unionization, but the effect is there.

                        • I'm interested in Law but more interested in Film. What I want ultimately is the financial freedom to make my films with my own money. If I go to film school, I will have more knowledge of how to make a good film and more contacts. But if I can get into a good law school then I'm hoping on seeing extra cash. I still have GI bill money left and I don't think I should let it go to waste..but how to best use it.
I thought that lawyers have a low unemployment rate.

                              That's because of two reasons.

                              1) Private schools are much easier to teach at.

                              2) Public school teachers often are unionized.

                                Strange definition for wisdom.
