How about your consumption, *****? You know full well that the majority of your earnings would do more good being spent by the very poor than it would being spent by you. But you go drink alcohol and let babies die around the world.

    • If you were unionized you'ld be all for them. There's nothing inherently wrong with unions.

      • I'm now convinced KH is deliberately trying to **** this thread up just to burying the evidence of him being wrong earlier.

If they were in line with what people want then they would bid up the price of the services of those people. Policing is a public good, but none of the others are. Revealed preferences are different than claimed preferences. This is a fundamental lesson of human behavior.

redistribution of wealth is a political question. in order for any redistribution to happen it is necessary to have a political environment conducive to that end. that means strong unions and social democratic political parties. if you look at countries which actually redistribute wealth you will find both of these elements. the colleration is no accident.
I understand: first the upper classes need to expropriate the lower orders, then they will magnanimously grant the peons more.

I'm not part of all your discussions idiot. I addressed specific statements we made. Pretending there's some wider meaning to it all that makes your ignorant statements less incorrect is just another absurdity on your part.

Theoretically I think the only 'strenuous' part of this is the supervised residency training. It seems to be 1 year and not the 3-8 that is the US usual.

I actually know of people who go to foreign countries to study to be doctors (because it takes less time and is cheaper) and then return to the US to become certified and practice medicine.

An MD I think is 4+3 in the US and is a straight 5 years in the UK. Especially considering the expense of the last 3, I think this is a much bigger issue than certification.

I agree that it is fortunate that we have outlets like importing foreign doctors. It doesn't mean that the overall effect isn't to restrict supply. Borders, distance and language form their own barriers to entry, and people crossing them can only go part way to rectifying the damage done by the domestic regulation.

              • Being a Police Officer is something that I always wanted to do...When I first retired from the military, I interviewed for a lot of jobs that I found boring. The jobs that I took, I also found to be boring. I have always believed in service to my community and I wanted to do something that would be interesting, exciting and give something back to my community. My worry was that I was too old. But one day, I just said **** it, I'm going to go out and try. I did great on the written tests and when I took the physical tests I often surpassed people younger than myself. The last issue and possible deal breaker was the pay. The police pay combined with my retirement pay allow me to live in a standard that is close to what I enjoyed as a Naval Officer so I am not complaining about the pay and I enjoy my job.

If you will stretch your mind back 8 weeks, I think you'll recall that I defended the hippies' rights to access public thoroughfares against what I claimed was the inappropriate behavior of police officers in restricting the area around the NYSE building. I also think that pepper spray and tasers are often deployed too casually by cops.

this might be true for buying a tv, but the pay of public sector employees is not the same. people can only influence such things very indirectly, so their preferences are unlikely to be clearly expressed. if you ask people directly, you get a much clearer idea of their preferences.

Well let's go back to that first thing I quoted that you've ducked 3 times now shall we...

"Then find another job, you whiny *****. Nobody's forcing you to take 25 bucks an hour to run the risks you do. Your revealed preferences are to value your life at less than 25 dollars an hour."

This is plainly wrong. You can't come to the conclusion about his valuation of his life with the information you have. You're just talking out of your ass. (And misrepresenting what he's actually said.)

You should probably sit down and breathe a little; I didn't claim that I was a utility maximizer, merely that I was unwilling to to actively destroy utility. Further, as I do not choose to consume in the form of untaxable items (like the enjoyment of ****ing off to the phillippines to become vice-president of a marriage cult or sitting around unemployed or working on academic problems of no interest or worth to anybody else) I provide a huge amount of utility to others through taxation.
