If he is making a sacrifice by becoming a cop then it is because he's deliberately taken a job where he is compensated less than he would be in some other profession, including the danger premium and whatever other job-specific considerations there are. By complaining that he isn't paid enough HE IS COMPLAINING ABOUT THE VERY SACRIFICE YOU'RE CLAIMING HE'S MADE DELIBERATELY.

Anything priceless is worthless. Human beings have shown, through their behavior, that there is a very real price which can be put on their own lives. They choose to enter occupations which are more or less dangerous, and there is a clear premium they charge to do so. This premium works out to between 6 and 8 million dollars a life, depending on the techniques you use. Note that this is of course a marginal estimate; there are those who value their own lives more and those who value them less.
