So in my home province of Manitoba, we have immigrants taking jobs all over the spectrum.
Many rural small towns have doctors who started their careers in South America, southeast Asia, South Africa and the Indian subcontinent - my doctor is from India. We actually have a booming furniture manufacturing industry, with many craftsmen from eastern Europe and South America. We have German & French cheesemakers. We have recently had a large influx of 'PIGS' in our construction industries.
And on the far end of the spectrum, many nice households have Filipina housekeepers/nannies.

Manitoba has had a difficult time keeping rural doctors, so immigrants are filling positions. People with special skills, such as craftsmen, brewers & cheesemakers fill positions Canadians cannot. Others fill positions (domestic, construction) positions Manitobans do not want to do.

Chances are, if you are in Canada or the US, you are descended from immigrants who 'took jobs' from people already here. If your family goes back a few hundred years in North America, you are descended from genocidal immigrants who took lives.

Back in 2008, I would gladly have taken a job as a cab driver. You can make a lot of money if you hustle. Well, those jobs were filled by immigrants thus not available.

You're blowing a whole lot of smoke to avoid admitting you were wrong. You're claiming that low skilled recent immigrants can take jobs from less recent low skilled immigrants but don't from low skilled native born workers. That's factually incorrect. Using specific examples I've seen in my life a fellow who owned his own landscaping business had his business go under because he couldn't compete with illegals who were under cutting his price, not paying minimum wage, not paying taxes, not following the law in any number of ways. Another guy I know started a hauling business but he rarely gets jobs now because immigrants are willing to do the same work for less money (in other words competition lowered the price) and you can go from specific field to specific field and the story is always the same. Construction workers, plumbers, and just about all blue collar low skilled trade jobs.

Flooding the market does indeed depress wages in each of those industries, those were native born folks who got displaced because wages were so depressed they said **** it. Like I said, in the long run immigration is good for the economy and even the jobs market but in the short to medium term it does indeed displace a lot of low skilled native born workers and the fact that you won't admit that is saying something about you. I know you know this is true, you are a smart guy, but your ego is getting in the way. Let me help you say: "You were right, I was wrong" and we can all put this behind us. It's not hard so man up.

As I've said similiar multiple times in this thread. I agree and over the long haul immigration is very good for both the economy and the job market but in the short run, yes, increased competition does decrease wages and it takes time for the economy to reach a new equalibrium. KH is denying this happens and he's wrong but he's being too small to admit it.

To be fair he has also claimed natives and immigrants don't compete for the same jobs, partially true in some cases (like berry picking), but at least in the cities there is a huge amount of overlap between low skilled native born folks and low skilled immigrants. KH won't even admit that last part is true.

Just to be clear you claimed low skilled immigrants don't lower the wages of low skilled native born because they don't directly compete with each other. You're wrong. You are so wrong everyone else can see it but you won't man up and admit it. That's sad, man.

The hard truth is you're the one being the **** here. You won't admit that additional competition from low skill immigrants lowers the pay for low skilled native born people because, yes (even if you won't admit it), MANY OF THEM ARE COMPETING FOR THE SAME LOW SKILL JOBS. You won't admit this and you've gone to great lengths to avoid admitting you're wrong, even calling people names simply because you don't want to admit you were wrong, and that's just sad. It's completely beneath you to behave this way.

Look, if I get laid off I might try landscaping until I find something better. Guess what, NO JOBS, AND LOW PAY BECAUSE OF IT. In addition the pay stays low for my previous career because of all the unemployed (surplus).

There is very little evidence of this actually happening. There is no a priori reason to believe that low-skill immigrants to the US (who mostly do not speak English) and low skill native-born Americans are close substitutes; the labor market is far more complex than simply "high skill vs low skill". The empirical estimates I've seen for the effect on native-born low skill wages are between -5% and 0%.

No, you jackass, what I said was that the Mexican and the American exist on different supply curves, even when the American is a high school dropout (or barely graduated) and when the Mexican lives next door to the American. They are not close substitutes for each other. This is backed by numerous empirical studies. I sometimes try to treat you with respect, but then I realize you are beyond hope.

Now, KH hasn't quoted his sources for these studies, but it's a logical and reasonable argument. We have the exact same thing in the UK so I don't find it surprising it's the same in the US.
