          HC,
I'm really starting to think you have it in for me. I initially only said, "I'm not for OPEN IMMIGRATION at this time." adding that we have to focus on employing the people already here. I have no problem with people of any other race, creed or religion. But sadly, I'm been drawn into a conversation where I have to be labeled either racist, idiot, stupid, bad human being or etc... What happened to just being wrong about an issue. I acknowledge that I have called you stupid on a specific issue but not just plain stupid.
I really don't even concern myself or think about immigration but I do believe that we are dealing in the realm of social science that is harder to quantify that other hard sciences. That being said. I can tell you that the majority of Cab Drivers in DeKalb County, Ga are Africans and that the overwhelming majority of workers in some factories are mexicans. If they were not driving the Cabs and working the factories then U.S. citizens would be doing those jobs. When I was growing up in this area the majority of people working those jobs were born and raised in the U.S. That is of course anecdotal evidence but a lot of times the truth on the ground is much different than what you see on paper.
What I really want you too take from this is that too me immigration is a NON-ISSUE. I don't spend too much time thinking about and I really don't care one way or the other because I am willing to work inside the parameters that are set forth on immigration policy. However, when I go to vote and I do vote.. if there is a proposition concerning open immigration I will vote against it AT THIS TIME. Prior to 2007, I would have voted for it. When I feel this country is on it's feet financially, I would vote for it.
For now, it is a major distraction for politicians who should be trying to focus on fixing the economy, education, jobs, healthcare and national security. Those are my important issues.

            HC,
Have you ever had a job? Have you ever had to compete with multiple persons for 1 job?
Would you rather compete with 5 persons for 1 job or would rather compete with 6 persons for 1 job?

Yes, I have had several jobs, and had to compete with over a dozen applicants for all of them. I would obviously rather compete with fewer people, but that doesn't mean that I should. Pax, you don't seem to understand--the job should go to the person who is best at it. I don't care if that person is an immigrant or not, if he's better than me, he deserves the job.

That's an interesting point of view. It certainly makes you a citizen of the world. Congrats. I however am a citizen if the u.s.' i have served on behalf of the american citizen and as an american citizen i expect my country to be looking out for me. I don't believe that this s is an unreasonable expectation. That is one of the reasons that military service has been a path to citizenshi for many. You seem to have outgrown the concept of nations.

Pax, even your premise is false, however. There is zero evidence that immigrants actually take jobs, and tons of evidence that they create jobs. By performing work more efficiently, they free up capital for other pursuits, which employ more people. So not only is your position, by your own admission, racist--it is factually incorrect!

To be clear, I agree with Felch that the US government's responsibility is first and foremost to its citizens. However, as a human being and not a government, I'm not more responsible to my fellow Americans than I am to anyone else. That said, immigration has been demonstrated time and again by economists to improve the economy.

Bringing in lots of low skilled workers does depress wages for other low skilled workers and that happens almost immediately. Now, over the long term, as wages go down that should theoretically (all things being equal) attract more businesses and create more opportunities which eventually should cause wages to rise again but the problem is it takes time for that new equilibrium state to be reached. That means folks already here see their quality of life and earnings go down immediately and that's why they start screaming "They took our jobs!"

If you're further up the wage scale because you have a higher skill set then you immediately see your standard of living go up though because competition on services increases and costs go down. Let's say you want to remodel your house or hire a gardener, well now there are more people willing to do the job so competition should force the price down so you can buy more services for your money improving your quality of life. So in the end it all depends on where you stand and how long you're willing to wait for things to improve over the long haul.

That's right. Immigrants take people's jobs. We have one where I work, and he's highly skilled (now).
