  • I can't ever imagine the purpose or necessity of knowing the family tree of Nero. That's pure trivia. That is not knowledge.

    • Well, in a power failure you won't have enough light to do much of anything in most schools. What a stupid comment.
It's called daylight asher. With the invention of a window. Plenty of light.

      • power failure? That's your argument? What happens on a very rare contingency?

        • Power outages happen more rarely than snow in Fairfax schools, and are more likely to require the kids to miss a day of school than snow is anyways.
If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

Yo when I was down there at OCS in January-March 2010, there was a crapload of snow!

Where I went to school the majority of classrooms did not have windows.

              • Actually what's funny is that in my day, while I never experienced a power failure in school, it wouldn't have had any effect. No lights? Open up the blinds and it's all good. In fact, on hot days in May and June, teachers would almost always turn off the lights anyway since we got enough light from the windows. The hall-ways would be pretty dark without the lights on, though.

But the point was that we rarely had any need for electricity. You don't need electricity to write on a chalkboard and students don't need electricity to write or read when natural light is sufficient.

Makes me wonder what schools today are like. I've only been out of high school for 8 years but it's sounding like stuff has changed and is changing dramatically

In all of my schools, there's been no windows or a very tiny window only.

                  • What the hell schools did you two attend? Philly public schools have big giant windows along an entire wall in every classroom not in the basement... at least in every school I've been to.

One where many of the classrooms are not adjacent to the building's exterior.

                          • Proper building design ensures that doesn't happen.

                            • It's a matter of design philosophy. My old middle school had few windows and they were all narrow. It was built with energy conservation in mind. My elementary school had a courtyard and giant windows in every classroom. It was built to use natural light. They're only a couple miles apart, but different design priorities made them completely different.
