    Shame on you. Seriously.

    General culture is important.

Incidentally, you appear to lack culture (though you are intelligent)

Reciting the family tree of Nero is "culture"

        • Yes it is.

You associate stories to their names, historical events, fun anecdotes.

You learn the names, you remember the story.

How many times have you heard someone "well, you know, the king back then, whose uncle, was it the 1st or 2nd century, ..."

This is how high you should set the bar if you value culture. You don't have to, but don't mock people who do.

          • You are confusing your particular obscure interest/obsession with "culture" in general.

Fact: if most people cannot relate to it, it isn't culture.

Memorizing the relations of a Roman emperor is "general culture"?

You would make a poor pedagogue.

The point is to teach intellectual perfectionism through a topical approach.

Also, you're American, and Americans tend to snob general culture, ergo you underestimate people's ability to relate.

Now you have the gall to call other people snobs after you turn up your nose at people who can't name Nero's grandparents...? **** you.

The idea that people need to be able to memorize obscure crap in order to appreciate culture is ridiculous. And branding it "intellectual perfectionism" is also ridiculous unless you think the ideal for intellectuals is to memorize and regurgitate what other people have said.

And you're not correct about note-taking, you just haven't had lectures like those I had.

Usually in humanities and social sciences, EVERYTHING has to be written down.
I'm not referring to your anecdotal experience.

There's MANY studies on this. Google it.

Things in humanities are already written down. Sometimes people have things called "textbooks" which contain words written down pertaining to the subject.

Lectures do not exist so you can produce your own sloppily written textbook.

Well, in a power failure you won't have enough light to do much of anything in most schools. What a stupid comment.
