Cursive for exams? Are you serious?

Most teachers and professors I've had PROHIBITED cursive for written essays. Cursive is a nightmare to read.

Then your profs are lazy, your fellow students are *****, or both.

First day of teller training, I kid you not, we had to do an activity where we matched the famous American's portrait with the dollar amount of the currency he is on. Considering how in depth the hiring and screening process was, I don't see how they couldn't just assume everyone knew it.

However, there is a foreign immigrant there who could have some trouble but he knew it.

My girlfriend - a teacher - says you all who support cursive need to cry a tear of nostalgia and get over it. She would also like to mention that she's about to take notes in cursive.

She adds that instead of focusing on cursive we could focus on grammar, telling time, spelling, and counting change.

Cursive is hard as **** to read, especially when written quickly by a stressed student taking an exam. And the professor has to read 30+ essays written in wildly varying cursive styles... it's a nightmare for them.

What the hell is wrong with print? I never had any problems and all I did was print. Learn how to print fast. It's not that hard. And it's not like lifting the writing utensil off the paper is that time-consuming.

There's never any question about what a printed word says. Cursive? Holy ****. It's quite often unintelligible, especially when written fast.

It's really not that bad when they've been taught properly, or when they learn to cope with stress.

Your professors are sacrificing rigor for convenience. The less students can be expected to write down, the less knowledge gets verified.

It's OK.

I would question her own techniques if she didn't pass on enough information that it warranted cursives. At least at this level. 14y olds should write down lots of stuff and memorize it.

Back to my opinions, now: Taking notes in cursive is idiotic. My notes in school were always a shorthand code of what I thought was important. I never had problems keeping up with the teacher, and I never read my notes again. I was also always at the top of my class test-wise, so I guess I knew wtf I was doing.

So she believes that grammar and spelling and learning to write cursive are distinct skills?

The easiest way to get people to learn spelling is to write the words down.

First of all, she does teach cursive. Second of all, @ the idea that you don't have choice in public school.
