Let's teach them how to send an SMS, this is how they communicate!!!
So instead of teaching them sex ed we should teach them about polka?

      Yes.

I've had issues with the kids I teach because they write, honestly, ~33% as fast as an adult with cursives. The time lost waiting for them to write down is tremendous.

Are you suggesting that high school students wouldn't ordinarily do polka?
If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

They're going to learn about sex on their own time anyway. Might as well teach them something they don't care about instead.

Well the writing style isn't that useful, and I certainly don't write by hand like I was taught at school. And I cannot write at a fraction of the speed that I can type so all documentation I perform are always typed. Still, I do usually still take notes the old fashioned way.

Sex ed is related to safety and health, it is VITAL. You teach them what abuse is, how to seek help if it happens. You teach them not to be ashamed of their sexual orientation, what safe sex is, etc.

This is all stuff we should MAKE SURE they know as soon as they develop a potential for sexual activity, and perhaps even before (esp. abuse).

The other day I had to sign my new passport with my first, middle, and last name, and I couldn't remember how to write my middle name in cursive. Had to look it up online and practice a few times first.

I think they can figure out what rape is and what STD's are on their own. Some of them have religious beliefs that tell them to be ashamed of their sexual orientation, but I'm not surprised you'd disrespect other people's cultural background.

                      Wow.

                      Are you religious?

I agree that using cursive is much much faster for note taking if you don't have a computer or such around. But I will admit that unless I'm really paying attention, I'm the only one can read my writing.

But yes typing is faster and with the many technological advances, keyboards are becoming much more available for everyday/every way use. So this is probably inevitable. But it still makes me feel old.

How did you find out about sexual abuse?

Why do the vast majority of victims still don't speak out?

Why are gay boys still being bullied and pushed around?

It's hard enough to discipline kids and draw their attention that you don't need them to have their own tablet or laptop in class.

From that point - if you're going to need handwriting anyway until they're grown up (late high school I'd say), better teach them the way that works.

Most of my college courses had computers in the room (since I was a programming major), and as a result I spent 90% of my class time playing minesweeper.
