Either you take the Word as it is given (as the Bible freaking tells you to on NUMEROUS occasions) or you are not a Christian.
No one's a real christian. Everyone thinks christianity is what they want it to be. I wish they'd go a step further and realize that they can and in fact are formulating their own beliefs based on what makes sense to them. If they did that maybe they'd dispense with their superstitious nonsense altogether.

Genocide was acceptable because it was necessary to survive. At least, that is my understanding.

Just like (possibly, I don't claim to be a great judge of morality) bombing Japan/German cities in WW2 was acceptable because it was necessary to win the war (in a timely fashion).

In war things become acceptable which are not acceptable in peacetime. Like killing another human being (for a just war).

God knew what could happen, therefore He knew what Israel should do.

Also, God can take life away. He can choose his instruments as He wishes.

So no, genocide was not acceptable because it would keep Israel faithful to God. Just liking killing is not acceptable because it would keep someone faithful to God. Genocide was acceptable because God judged the canaanites and knew the future, and knew what was best.

This is based on my understanding of the story. Not this doctrine, but that it applies to this story.

Was God wrong for destroying Sodom (in the story in Genesis)?

I've always found the whole murder-is-bad thing to be much simpler to explain. I don't like the idea of someone killing me, and I'm willing to eschew killing other people if I can be reasonably assured they will eschew killing me. Boy, I'm glad I don't have to sip wine and eat cardboard every sunday to figure that out.

You have to worship the Bible to be a real Christian?

By the way, I don't have a problem with religion or religious people. It just baffles me. Thought I would throw that out there

The Bible is the Word. The Bible tells you what to do, what to believe, etc.

                No, that is the Quran.

                The Word is Christ.

What I'm most interested in, Jon, is how you justify Christianity as more valid than, say, Hinduism. Or Judaism. Or any religion, seriously just pick one.

                    I think you're confusing religions.

JM, so you're saying God has the right to decide who dies and when? When he tells people they shouldn't kill, it's not because killing is wrong, but because they are infringing on god's right to decide when people die?

                        Fundamentally by experience.

Initially, when I was in highschool and reevaluating what I believed, because I recognized that I was sinful and the other religions don't provide a solution for that.

(And the non-major religions were not believable, so I didn't consider them.)

That is a tautology. You seem to be saying that you believe it because it makes the most sense to you. I was asking you why it makes more sense to you. Is it not something you can qualitatively or quantitatively describe? Is it just more intuitive to you?

                              First, murder is wrong.

We are sinful. We have broken God's law. We deserve death.

Yes, God can judge us. And can apply His judgement. And this can mean an early death. But it means death anyways, that is how the universe works for us, because of sin. Because of our sin. Because of my sin.

JM, you're saying all people deserve death, but it is wrong to kill them? Only God is allowed to kill something that deserves death?
