For most of my life, it wasn't worthwhile for me, either.

Then came one Sunday night at 3 AM when I waited huddled in my stairwell for 15 minutes until the police arrived while I counted the number of times my cell phone disconected from 911. Turned out to be six times.

Suddenly, it had a value I could scarely imagine before.

I imagine this would be quite scary in a country where guns are so readily available. The intruder might've been armed!

How much safer it would be if you lived in a country with better gun control.

Keep trotting this out, Tex, but the stats don't lie.

In countries with stricter gun control, there are far fewer deaths as a result of crime. Even if the murder rates are also lower, the percentage of murders committed with firearms are also much lower (which could very well go a long way to explaining the lower death rate).

There are tons of guns in Canada for this kind of reason. Canada's a manly, wildernessy, wild nation. We're less about crack & whores and more about mountains & forests.

The difference is the guns we have in Canada tend to be things like 0.22s. And this makes a huge difference.

Compare and contrast the Taber school shooting with Columbine. The Taber shooting was eight days after Columbine.

Criminals find it extremely hard to get guns here. You just don't find a mugger or drug addict with a gun. They are too rare, the punishments for possession are too high, no-one they are robbing will have one.

The chances of criminals being armed are so low that most of our police don't even need guns. (and in surveys the police usually vote in favour of keeping the status quo, with specialist armed officers, not all cops being armed).
