Keeping a firearm near my bed is simply not worthwhile.

    • I live in the "bad" part of a city of 350K. In the six years I've been here the only crime I have been subjected to was some minor automobile vandalism in the parking lot.

      • The thought of having a loaded gun in the house is quite disturbing to me.

        • What do gun owners do when they have children?

          • The potential danger to self, friends and family far outweighs any potential security benefit.

I played with dad's guns when my parents were away.

edit - In the interest of full disclosure -

I also managed to lodge a crossbow quarrel into a backyard tree that proved troublesome to remove in time...

For most of my life, it wasn't worthwhile for me, either.

Then came one Sunday night at 3 AM when I waited huddled in my stairwell for 15 minutes until the police arrived while I counted the number of times my cell phone disconected from 911. Turned out to be six times.

Suddenly, it had a value I could scarely imagine before.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

                • As terrifying as that must have been, it is such a statistical longshot in these parts that I'll take my chances.

                    well, have to be rsponsable
It is all the dumb gun owners who have lost a child to playing with a gun.
Just like having knives in the house.

                    • I never played with knives (or baseball bats before someone brings that tired cliche up again).

                      • My brother and his best childhood friend played all sorts of dumb games with dangerous items.

One day, the friend ran crying home with a dart sticking out of the back of his head.
