I don't like him, I just hate him less than Dion and Ignatieff and Layton.

    • I think it's because you are from Alberta. You have Conservative disease.

      • It's more of protecting local interests. I'd be at a huge disadvantage with Dion or Ignatieff or Layton in power.

They would severely harm the Alberta Oil industry, which directly affects my SO's employment and the general economic health of my family and city.

Like most Canadians I am within one hour of the border. What used to be a rather frequent trip simply doesn't happen anymore.
Actually US-Canadian trade has gone up in the last few years, if I recall correctly.

That doesn't have anything to do with cross-border shopping or tourism, which is what Wezil is referring to (I think).

Depends on what you mean by "the last few years"

                  • Those trade balance numbers use very bad measurements gribbler. I don't really know enough about the specifics to go into detail, but it doesn't take into account a lot of products that go through intermediates, like things that are built here then assembled somewhere else or intellectual property or other stuff. So much of that deficit is actually a phantom.

But even those numbers seem to be showing a deficit that has decreased. And I think a lot of products are excluded from the measurement, not sure

                    • I don't care about the trade balance figures. Imports and exports are both significantly lower than they were a few years ago. So no, I would not say trade has increased in "the last few years" unless you would like to offer a better measure.

                      • Not exactly what I was referring to.

I'm talking about Canadians that would make the trip to the US for a number of reasons (commonly called cross border shoppers). Usually a few days or less.

Even this number isn't even a good indicator of those that choose not to go to the US for non-economic reasons as cross border shopping rates are highly linked to the exchange rate.

Yeah, Al Qaeda has succeeded beyond its wildest dreams...

The US shouldn't give a **** about terrorism seeing as they blithely let their own population kill each other at the rate of several 9/11s a year without even batting an eyelid.

I don't think I'll be going back under the current climate because frankly it's too much hassle - why even bother visiting a place when it's going to be a total c*nt letting you in...?

Thankfully I've been all over the States several times already, so it's not like I feel like I'm missing out - just sad at the way it's allowed 9/11 to affect so badly to its very core...
