Monk, it sounds like you live in a rural community now. People in rural communities don't posses the same innate paranoia of people who live in cities. There's is a good chance those men just wanted to fish behind your house and were nice enough to ask permission first, albeit stupid enough to do it at three in the morning.
If they wanted to break in they would have just done that, you're out in the middle of nowhere, no one will hear you scream. That said, yes you need a gun, and you need to learn how to use it safely.

In rural America, you should probably answer the door. It is almost always something non-sinister -- e.g., somebody might have run off the road and needed you to call 911 (cell phones are often not in range of the tower). If you're scared about stuff like this, don't get a gun. Rather, get a sliding chain lock.
That said, my dad was in the same situation as you. He answered the door and it turned out to be an escaped juvi convict from the down the road, who ended up stealing their car. They never even used to lock their doors -- even when they went on vacation. Get a chain-lock/etc, but yeah... it is rural america. They wanted to fish in your pond. The small chance it was methheads going to take something would be handled by the chain-lock/etc.
Pulling a gun in such a situation would be a terrible idea, if you feel it would be than I recommend you don't get one.
