    • How is Subway or Checkers cafeterias? A place isn't a cafeteria ONLY because you have to walk with your food to sit down and it. Especially, if the place has 3 outdoor benches or 1 indoor with 4 chairs like a typical Subway! How is a seating configuration where you have one option and it's a table against the wall next to the bathroom somehow a cafeteria? Cafeteria implies a larger setting with the availability to select a wide range of food usually in a production system (for example, a school cafeteria or a mall food court).

and anyway, I was saying the seating at Subway and Checkers is pathetic. It's not just a Philly thing, it's nationwide. Checkers, for example, have modular construction and are exactly the same everywhere in the country.

No. The Subways I've eaten at have ample seating not located only adjacent to the restroom. And the tables seemed adequate and not what I might consider "ghetto".

            • Oh mighty asher -- what do you think of purchasing a recreational property--in particular a rec home on 5 acres down in the Kootenay mountains (near but not on a couple of lakes)

              • I think it's a brilliant idea. I actually had a ~30m discussion with the SO yesterday about doing that ourselves in 5 or so years.

Not necessarily the same area, but the same idea.

No, a proper restaurant doesn't let men not wearing trousers in. If it does, it's a cafe.

                      • Incidentally, the term is usually used in the context of people moving to the southern USA. If anyone here could be accused of being a carpetbagger, it's the little Canadian who prays every night he could live in Texas. It certainly does not apply to people buying recreational properties in a neighboring province.

                          • Carpetbagger doesn't mean someone who moves to a different province, let alone someone who buys a recreational property in a province while maintaining a primary residence in another province.

                            God, you're so ****ing stupid.

                            • In United States history, "carpetbaggers" was a negative term Southerners gave to Northerners (also referred to as Yankees) who moved to the South during the Reconstruction era, between 1865 and 1877. It was a derogatory term, suggesting opportunism and exploitation in the outsiders. The relocated northerners often formed alliances with freed slaves and southern whites who were Republicans, who were nicknamed scalawags. Together they are said to have politically manipulated and controlled former Confederate states for varying periods for their own financial and power gains. In sum, carpetbaggers were seen as insidious Northern outsiders with questionable objectives meddling in local politics, buying up plantations at fire-sale prices and taking advantage of Southerners. Carpetbagger is not to be confused with copperhead, which is a term given to a person from the North who sympathized with the Southern claim of right to Secession.
The term carpetbaggers was also used to describe the white Northern Republican political appointees who came South, arriving with their travel carpetbags. Southerners considered them ready to loot and plunder the defeated South.[1]
In modern usage in the U.S., the term is sometimes used derisively to refer to a politician who runs for public office in an area where he or she does not have deep community ties, or has lived only for a short time. In the United Kingdom, the term was adopted to refer informally to those who join a mutual organization, such as a building society, in order to force it to demutualize, that is, to convert into a joint stock company, solely for personal financial gain.

With one difference. Neither you nor Flubber have any interest in becoming residents of BC. When I go to TX it will be to stay. None of this 'recreational properties' bull****.

Buying rec properties is the definition of 'carpetbagger'.
