The projects I do on my own time are individual, independent projects. I give them a timeline for when it will be done and how much I will charge for it, they understand I work a full-time job as well.

I get paid a deposit with when the contract is signed then I get paid the balance once UAT is complete and they sign off.

When you buy goods at the store, you buy the end product...you don't bill the manufacturer per hour of labour.

I sell small, custom products. Mostly internal apps (my first was for a GTA small real estate company -- I fell into the job after my realtor in finding this place found out I was a software developer and asked if I knew someone who could build a app he wanted).

These kinds of people don't understand what's involved in technology, nor do they care. They don't want to deal with hourly invoices. They have a problem and they want a solution, and they pay for the solution as a product. "You give me $20,000, I'll solve that problem for you"

The real money is in the support contracts, though.
