Again, if there was any intelligence in Israel I'm sure they'd realize what they're doing to Gaza right now is reinforcing their siege mentality. And what do people do when they feel they're under siege?

We just saw a microcosm of that on the ships. They fight back, they turn to extremist groups because the official channels are apparently getting them nowhere.

Asher, antisemitism persisted in the United States. Lots of Jews weren't so lucky and were turned back by immigration for being Jews (nativism in the US ) When israel was created there was literally NOWHERE for jews to go. When my grandfather got a job at a law firm it was an "experiment" to see if Jews could work in a non-jewish business. It was determined that jews needed a country so that they could defend themselves because clearly no other country would have them. Now there are 6 million jews in Israel and they are certainly not going to just pack up and leave for the US.

      • I am not sure if a good option for the Israel and the ME exists. However, there is a big difference between no longer aiding Israel, and letting the large number of Muslim countries (who are also all biased) use the UN as a political tool.

The fact that your country is notoriously backwards and behind the times is irrelevant.

Canada had a massive number of Jews come to Canada both before and after WW2.

            • Interesting how you are quoting from pre-WW2 attitudes and not post-WW2 attitudes, which is actually what we are talking about.

There was a massive shift in public opinion after WW2 which resulted in a complete change in the country's immigration laws, as well as public support for jews.

That remains true. There were many Jews in Canada before WW2.

Over 100,000, which was a significant portion of Canada's population then (~10 million).

                    • Wow HC has been brainwashed by the Anti-Defamation League or something... He's like the Jewish Al Sharpton but worse.

                      If I hear antisemitism again...

And Jewish Americans do pretty damn well for themselves on average despite all this supposed antisemitism.

46% of Jewish households earn $100+K! That's freaking ridiculous! It's only 18% for the total US population!

47% of households that attend Historically Black Protestant Churches earn less than 30K/year but 46% of Jewish households earn $100+K!

Who is really being affected by prejudice in this country? It sure aint the Jews, you entitled punk.

I guess this post is anti-semitic and will be reported to the ADL.

I think Israel would have to a complete idiot if they think this will get the Palestinians to toss out Hamas rather than rallying behind them. It's like Israel failed basic psychology if you believe this.

                          From a few weeks ago:

Support for Hamas has declined in the West Bank and Gaza, but Palestinians' confidence in both top parties is waning, an opinion poll released this week shows.

                          • Coming out of lurk for this...
For the first time since the Persian Gulf War in 1991, more than 6 in 10 Americans -- 63% -- say their sympathies in the Middle East situation lie more with the Israelis than with the Palestinians. Fifteen percent side more with the Palestinians, down slightly from recent years.

Eighty-one percent (81%) of U.S. voters agree with Israeli President Benjamin Netanhyahu that Palestinian leaders must recognize Israel’s right to exist as part of a Middle Eastern peace agreement.

As Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visits Israel and the West Bank this week, 63% of Americans view Israel favorably, contrasted with 73% who view the Palestinian Authority unfavorably. When choosing sides, 59% support Israel vis-à-vis the Palestinians, identical to a year ago.

This is a pretty good demonstration of how Americans feel about support for Israel:
Forty-nine percent (49%) of Americans say that if Israel attacks Iran because of the latter’s continuing development of nuclear weapons, the United States should help Israel.
I can count the people I've met personally that don't support Israel on one hand.

Bottom line: Americans love Israel, and unlike the euros, we aren't interested in betraying our closest ally for Arab oil, let alone a PR stunt. The practical reasons for our alliance are many, but are mere side benefits. We support Israel on principle.

                            Back to lurking.

                            • That doesn't mean Israel's actions caused a decline in support for Hamas.

I think that says much more about American attitudes towards Iran than about Israel.
