  • I read this morning that the activists were given the option of returning home or staying and being arrested, and they all chose arrest. I think this sums up their intent here. They were trying to force a response and draw attention to it. And of course Israel fell for it and over responded. And looks silly again.
It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

    • So they're choosing arrest over deportation, and you're criticizing Israel for taking the bait? So just to be clear then, you agree in this case that the "peace activists" are basically full of ****?

        • I'm pretty sure they generally open it once a month anyway, don't they?

They force the boats to an Israeli port then deliver what they deem acceptable. Lots of stuff that is not weapons and tanks gets held up and not delivered (like concrete). You can't build in a modern society without concrete...

            • Then again they wouldn't need any concrete if the IDF hadn't destroyed civilian houses, hospitals, UN bases etc...

Except this is an unscheduled opening of the border. The question is, do the Egyptians have the balls to keep it open indefinitely as either the US or Israel will threaten them to close it...?

                • The last thing Egypt wants is war with Israel. The only reason the egyptians are nice to the Israelis because they haven't forgotten the '73 war and believe me they aren't going to any time soon.

The last thing Israeli wants is a war with Egypt.

Israel is so isolated and looks terrible in the eyes of the public. I would suspect no one would come to Israel's aid in the war, but some countries would aid Egypt.

And it would be a political disaster for Israel.

                    • That's completely false Asher. Firstly, Israel has repeatedly demonstrated itself capable of defending against Arabs, even when they have allies like the Soviet Union. Even without US support in a war (Which it would DEFINITELY get), Israel would be able to hold its own against the egyptian army even combined against Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, etc.

I don't think I ever said Israel should have gone further, I did say I think Israel should have done more to protect its soldiers (such as bringing along tear gas and riot gear).
i think you're the one not paying attention you little fool. cast your eyes back a few pages to oredin's post (120) where he said this.

Personally, I would have just declared them hostile the second they became violent and then sank the ship with all aboard. It would have been perfectly legal. The survivors could make a statement just before their hanging. The best that can be said about this ship is they were attempting to pave the way for Muslim terrorist arms smugglers. They should all be hanged. The sooner the better.
to which i responded that oredin had really gone off the deep end (122). you then quoted me and said that you actually agreed with oredin (125). by this you made it very clear that you wanted the israelis to go further (because, you know, killing 10 people just isn't a strong enough response). to say nothing of the ridiculous crap you posted about the people on board the ship not being civilians after refusing orders.

also, it has already been explained, several times by several different people here what the problem is with the israeli actions. it was not the fact they intercepted the ship, it was that they did so in international waters, at night, by dropping commandos from the sky, and by doing this created a situation where inevitably there was massive confusion and as a direct result of their actions, people have been killed unnecessarily. it has also caused international outrage, because, in the civilised world, such actions are not acceptable.

                        • Also wrt to looking bad in a war, Israel has never really cared a whole lot about how other governments view it, however much it may seem that they do at the moment.

Doesn't matter. I'm not saying they would lose the war, I'd say any such war would make Israel far more enemies in this world than friends. Even old friends are distancing themselves from Israel right now.

Obama would need to be crazy to have troops in active conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq, AND Israel/Egypt. And considering I don't see Egypt attacking Israel, any conflict would, of course, be Israel-instigated which would earn them NO friends.

Israel doesn't need troops, the only thing it could potentially need is material.
