What concerns me more are the basic logistics of enforcing this law: suppose the county Sheriff's deputies raid a sweatshop where illegals are known to work, card every employee at the door, and find a dozen illegals. WTF are they supposed to do with them?
They can do what they are doing now in AZ, put them up in a tent until ICE can come and deport them. AZ has been pretty successful at doing so.

I was more concerned with whether local ICE offices would have A) the resources and B) the inclination to take on that huge increase in volume.

One Arizona congressman called for businesses to boycott his own state, and a Catholic cardinal said the state may be encouraging "German Nazi and Russian Communist techniques" as pushback against Arizona's proposed crackdown on illegal immigrants went into high gear Tuesday.

Aren't Congressmen supposed to be representing their State rather than Mexico?

Do those same Catholic priests object to Mexico's treatment of illegal Guatamalans?

Mahoney's criticism was rediculous given the fact he seems unaware that Federal law already requires resident aliens to have documents on them at all times for inspection and the obvious Godwin he resorted to.

So what? There's a huge difference between a law being "on the books" and actually going out of your way to enforce it. See e.g. sodomy laws, don't-tie-your-giraffe-to-a-lampost ordinances, etc.

It's a little idiotic to start invoking the specter of impending Nazism and Stalinism over a law that has been on the books for decades as if you have only just discovered it.

DinoDoc, you make a fair point but the distinction between de jure and de facto and something going from one to the other is a reasonable one.

How so? It seems to me that if a law has been on the books for decades and has been enforced before its a little disingenuous to get hysterical when a state moves to enforce that law as well. Look there are arguements against the law (Darius put foward an interesting one earlier) but it should be beneath the dignity of a Catholic Bishop to sink to such levels of racial demagoguery.

On a somewhat related note, why is Napolitano Secretary of DHS if this is an unfair question?

The "must have papers" law is most certainly not enforced currently. In order to abide by that law I'd need to carry around my passport and a sheaf of papers 20 pages thick
