I'd guess around 800 or so.

      I guess 5k - 30k.

"This is a major event. This happened near some very populated areas," said Randy Baldwin, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey. "With an 8.8, you expect damage to the population in the area."...

Chilean television showed buildings in tatters in Concepcion, in coastal central Chile. Whole sides of buildings were torn off, and at least two structures were engulfed in flames. Video showed roads that were destroyed and impassable.
As the sun set in Chile on Saturday, a picture of the immense structural damage wrought by an early morning earthquake had come clearly into focus, with the nation's president estimating that 2 million people had been affected in some way.

          Can't even imagine a 8.8 earthquake

Hope that all our Chilean posters are ok.

My family is OK, thanks. I'm the only one with little injuries in my legs and back (the quake made me felt to my knees very hard and I get cutted by shattered glass, plus a 42' LCD landed on my back). My friends are all ok too, a lot of destruction inside their houses but they are ok.

The south of Chile got the worse. In small towns nearby Concepcion the destruction is almost total. There are reports of several cars that were eaten by the tsunami while they were trying to escape.
In San Antonio, located in Chile central coast near Valparaiso, almost 200 beach house were destroyed by the tsunami.
In Chillan the local prison collapsed and 269 inmates escaped. Guards and inmates fought in the streets, several dead. To avoid pursuit the fugitives turn on fire houses and small buisnesses. Military force has been deployed.

Robinson Crusoe island and the Juan Fermandez archipiélago were completely wiped out by tsunami 20 meters wave.

In Concepcion the devastation is unthinkable. Rescue teams from the firedepartment, the navy and the carabineros (police) aré fighting to reach survivors of the collapsed buildings. Many people died in their cars after the collapse of two bridges. The panamerican highway is cutted in several spots.

Stories read in twitter are overwhealming (sp?). We are a country prepared for big quakes, but this was so huge, so massive, so many cities involved. Is hard to accept.

Friend of mine in Hawaii was on a sailboat (on purpose). He reported 40-inch swells. Significant, enough to do some damage, but basically not a big deal there at this point.

Wow, and you are 600kms north and it was strong enough to shatter windows?

A terrible thing, Prez. It was a huge, by all accounts. A 42" LCD couldn't have been too comfortable to have land on you, but I'm glad it wasn't a wall.

This is the kind of thing that while not costing a huge loss of life, will be expensive to repair, and this is just one road.

Not from windows but from kitchen glasses, library doors and flower jars. Although in som le nearby buildings i can see sattered windows.

The 5th evening of the Viña del Mar international song Festival ended only some 40 minutes before the quake, which was kinda of a miracle, cause the lights of the anfitheater fell over the gallery that hold the 15,000 espectators just moments before.

Not to mention those lost in the panic after - good that didn't happen.

Bad though, I understand that your buildings are prepared for earthquakes - might be a good idea to give the next building engineer you meet a beer or two

Good luck to you and your CP. If what you say about smaller towns is true, the death toll will likely rise by a fair amount...

Sloww, it would have looked a lot worse if they weren't prepared.
