I think it would've been better without all the Sideways stuff messing up the flow of the on-Island plot, but it was still the first episode of this season that I'd consider for a spot in the top-five of Lost episodes. It was fantastic.

Yea, the sideways story did mess up the pacing somewhat. But the on-island stuff was so awesome, I didn't even really notice the sideways story that much.
Finding out how Locke was damaged in the other world was quite moving, I felt. We'll just have to agree to disagree.
Unfortunately, I didn't quite catch what Sayid said to Jack regarding Des, and I didn't want to rewind it to break up the flow of the episode. What did he say?
Four characters dead in the space of five minutes. And what's worse: none of them were Kate, despite her getting ****ing shot!
Only three candidates remain: one of them unconscious, one of them paralyzed with grief, the other with guilt. It's not looking too good for the good guys.

I might have cared more if Sayid hadn't just exploded, Sun and Jin hadn't just drowned and I wasn't waiting to find out if Hurley/Kate/Jack/Sawyer actually made it to the surface alive.

He told Jack that Desmond was alive in a well on the Island and that Jack would need Desmond because Jack was "the one". Jack's the Candidate.
Four characters dead in the space of five minutes.
And Sawyer got them all killed, the obstinate dick.
edit: Sorry, Guy. Sayid's exact words to Jack were ''Because it's going to be you, Jack.''
I can't blame him; he did what he thought was right, what anyone would think was right. Jack was, from James' perspective, talking nonsense.
Alternative Locke's history as a pilot: a hint to the ultimate fate of the Ajira plane?
One thing I'm trying to puzzle out: the bomb was initially on the plane. Now, there is no reason Locke would have actually put it on the plane; he could have just put it elsewhere. So one must assume that Widmore did, indeed, booby-trap the plane. However, he also seemed intent on protecting the candidates.
So, basically... WTF?

I think Widmore's goal is to keep Smokey from leaving the Island; imprisoning the candidates for their own protection was necessary to achieve that goal. Maybe blowing up the Ajira plane was also necessary? Smokey probably needs some way of leaving the Island after the candidates are all dead.
The puzzling aspect is why Widmore would booby-trap the plane instead of just blowing it up right away.

If the goal is to keep Smokey on the island, why booby-trap the plane? Why not just blow it the **** up? Why chance it would take the candidates with it?
Looks like next week is the much-rumored Jacob/Smokey episode; probably won't get much answers to the current island situation.
I wonder where Widmore and Zoe were holed up during Smokey's assault on the Hydra station.

Don't know. Maybe Widmore was baiting Smokey into coming to the Hydra island for some unknown purpose? What was Widmore planning to use Desmond for, exactly?

Ahhhh. Excellent counterpoint. I had forgotten Des's role in Widmore's mysterious masterplan. Gonna have to wait at least two weeks to find out, too.
My mind is still reeling. Three characters who have been around since episode one, dead dead dead. Another character who was 97% pure awesome, and 3% top-quality 80s cheese, dead. Just like that. Baiting us and baiting us with Frank and the plane, and then: surprise, *****es! Can't believe you fell for that ****!
I'm actually desperating holding on to the 0.2% of me who thinks they are gonna pull a Jin-on-the-freighter with Lapidus.

The bomb shouldn't have gone off when Sayid ran off with it. He effectively sacrificed himself to save the others, but the island shouldn't have let him do it because it was still technically suicide.
