If I was looking for somebody to give me billions of dollars I'd make up some pretty estimates too. In fact, that's precisely how the business world works, nye.

Turns out there's two types of expos. Real ones and toy ones.

Real ones are like the ones in Shanghai, toy ones are like the ones Edmonton is bidding on.
Real ones are 6-months, toy ones 3-months.

Attendance targets for toy expos are 4-20 million. Edmonton is TARGETTING (not estimating) 4.7 million.

And this figure includes every attendance, not unique people. So if the average Edmontonian goes twice over the 3 months it's up, that's already almost half their target.

From the Edmonton bid's own site, it's not expected to be profitable in any way. It's a massive ****ing public subsidy.

- The actual attendance of EXPO '67 was 50 million. The better-than-expected attendance revenue reduced the EXPO's debt significantly to below the original estimates. The final revenues were $220 million, costs were $430; the deficit was $210 million (1967 dollars). Montreal was a six-month EXPO with no site restrictions (equivalent to today's Registered category).
- The attendance of EXPO '86 was $22 million. The revenues were $490 million, costs were $802 million and the deficit was $337 million (1986 dollars). The deficit was paid off by a provincial lottery. Vancouver was a four-month EXPO with no site restrictions (equivalent to today's Recognized Category prior to BIE regulation changes).

It's a terrible idea. Aside from being political suicide, it's not practical right now.

We all know there are peaks and valleys with resource revenue, which is why a competent government WILL watch their spending and pocket most of the surplus revenue into large funds from which they can withdraw from as resource revenues fall. Then you have stable funding infrastructure without a sales tax, which HURTS the economy -- especially at a time like now, it'd be epicly stupid.

Alberta doesn't need sales tax revenue. It just needs a government who doesn't spend money like it's free. The provincial per-capita spending is the highest in the country. There's no real stable-revenue fund to dip into on lean years. That's what needs to be addressed.

Taxing the population further in a province that has far more surplusses than deficits is retarded.
