How can you sell the resources without pillaging the province?

    • Is there any support for a sales tax in AB?

      • Asher, I think we should be banking a lot more of the resource benefits.

People here today should be paying their own way (sales tax). The cash from the resources should not be paying operating costs.

There's more to the world than Russia.

The answer is 120k barrels per day of Oil from Russia, 485k barrels per day of Petroleum from Russia.

            Other US oil imports (2008):
1928k barrels per day from Canada.
1525k barrels per day from Saudi Arabia.
1174k barrels per day from Mexico
1038k barrels per day from Venezuela
944k barrels per day from Nigeria
661k barrels per day from Iraq
502k barrels per day from Angola
and many other 100k+ barrels per day from other countries

Look at that list -- it's a GLOBAL market. And yes, Russia and China and the like are trending upwards in terms of production in a large way. And yes, to an increasing amount of people in the US THEIR oil is preferable to our oil because it is not "dirty oil". To the companies themselves, the production costs are much lower there also.

Pretty sure NYE is the only person.

              • It doesn't mean it is a bad idea. Few people are receptive to brand new taxes.

I'm asking about gas specifically because that seems to be the main topic of your article.

                  • The answer, BTW, would be near zero.

Did they ever build that LNG terminal?

I don't think Russia does import natural gas to the US yet. Doesn't mean it's not possible in the future.

Not that it matters. Mexico's natural gas imports to the US was 0 in 2003 and it's been increasing every year since. Canada's has fallen in recent years. But you are correct in that the vast majority of US natural gas imports are from Canada, for obvious reasons.

It's folly to think this will always be the case if Canada screws them around.

                      • Asher, they have massive gas of their own that has recently become economical to extract.

                        • Gas is a dead or dying issue for Alberta. That's the impression I am under.

Conventional oil is declining as well, as the easy stuff is going or gone.

The real deal is over the oil sands, and that is what is at the core of the bellyaching.

                          It's all about the bitumin(s).

It's a terrible idea. Aside from being political suicide, it's not practical right now.

We all know there are peaks and valleys with resource revenue, which is why a competent government WILL watch their spending and pocket most of the surplus revenue into large funds from which they can withdraw from as resource revenues fall. Then you have stable funding infrastructure without a sales tax, which HURTS the economy -- especially at a time like now, it'd be epicly stupid.

Alberta doesn't need sales tax revenue. It just needs a government who doesn't spend money like it's free. The provincial per-capita spending is the highest in the country. There's no real stable-revenue fund to dip into on lean years. That's what needs to be addressed.

Taxing the population further in a province that has far more surplusses than deficits is retarded.

                            • NYE, you are seriously one stupid ****. Trying to extract rents from the couple of dollars per barrel equivalent of transportation costs is just the type of retarded plan you would come up with. Source volumes DON'T TELL YOU ANYTHING about the fungibility of energy across the globe. Even small differentials in price will lead to strong stratification of sourcing volumes.

                              ****ing ****.

We have the lowest income taxes in Canada, and among them in North America.

We have no provincial sales tax.

We are blowing all the cash from the resources on ourselves and **** the grandkids (or their grandkids).
