  • I see your reasoning, but I don't buy it. The authorities should not be allowed anything just because it's the government.
Well, I'm all ears to your interpretation as to why Christ would be opposed to torture. I can say that he would reject torture as a means to settle disputes between Christians, but I cannot see evidence that he would bar torture as a tool by the civilian authorities, nor that he freed prisoners for their crimes. He did not spare the theives on the cross, until they admitted their own sins, that they might be freed from death itself through confession.

This is why the preservation of the health of those who have been captured is important, for they cannot repent without opportunity to do so. However, if they hold relevant information that has a bearing on the suvival of others, it is their burden to release the information before further harm can be done.

I'm very open to your argument that I'm off on this or I've missed and overlooked something which is pertinent.

      • It's amazing how many people know the innermost motivations and thoughts
of a semi-mythical religious cult leader who has been dead for 2000 years...

        • Who was the character in the old testament that god allowed lucifer to torture in order to disprove his faith? That would appear to be evidence that the Judeo/Christian god supports torture if the reasons are fitting.

          • It is obvious that God allows torture. If God didn't allow torture, no torture would occur.

That is very different than God supporting torture.

And Job is one of the top contenders (with Genesis) for being a metaphorical book.

            • OK, quibble about my use of allow. Did he not order lucifer to test Job?

As for its being metaphorical, well thats a given to me.

              • God didn't order Satan to test Job. Satan said that Job worshiped God due to God protecting Him. God then said that He wouldn't protect Job any longer...

Prologue - In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil. He had seven sons and three daughters, and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys, and had a large number of servants. He was the greatest man among all the people of the East. His sons used to hold feasts in their homes on their birthdays, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. When a period of feasting had run its course, Job would make arrangements for them to be purified. Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of them, thinking, “Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.” This was Job’s regular custom.

I stand corrected. God just didnt intervene to prevent the torture. OK.

If you disagree, I'd like to see your argument why.

Just saying it's wrong won't work.
