Yeah, when I wanted to download the patch for BTS and couldn't find it here, that's the problem. I hated going to CFC for that, but there it was easy to find.
Instead of fixing that we spent our time arguing whether to ban ASHER. Great priorities.
I guess I got tired of being constantly blamed for the downward trend of this site.

Well, I hope you don't feel I felt that way. I thought you and Ming did a fine job.

Fortunately it's not my concern anymore even though I've always wished and will continue to hope for Poly's continued existence and success. The new owners have their work cut out for them and I wish them luck.

I'm not sure there's much that really can be done, other then fixing the site so that it is more stable, and getting rid of that puke green.

"SOME" claim that the OTF drives away the On-Topic posters. Which is simply BS. I would think that the lack of content does that job well enough. Sure, some noob might enter the OTF and get swatted like a fly and leave.
But our on topic posters are really more helpful than their counterparts at CFC who look down their noses at newbees in the On Topic forums. Again, on topic should be driving the new blood... and it isn't. But they still want to blame the OT trolls for all the problems.

I could use some help with Civ 3 and 4 so it would be great if the on-topic got some new life.

I was gonna mention that as a MAJOR problem in the thread about "how to fix apolyton". Before I flapped my gums about it though, I thought I better check it out. As it turned out the download section has been vastly improved. I found Dales mod for BtS and easily found some of my old CIV3 animations (although the numbers of times they had been downloaded was completely wrong).

Exactly! It is a waste of time arguing about it. Asher should have been banned long ago

I will agree that the download section has been improved. But I haven't needed it since that happened so as far as I'm concerned the barn door was closed too late.

Suggestion: Content content content.

Adopt a modern CMS system and use the hell out of it. Hire new content editors. Have a "Strategy of the Week" or something. Have round-table discussions published (perhaps pruned from interesting threads of the week). Put a spotlight on the content being generated here.

Featured mods, featured scenarios, Q&A with Firaxis or prominent Civvers, tutorials (Wanna get involved with [demogames/PBEM/etc], here's how!), a wikipedia-like resource for Civ strategies and information, strategy guides and resources, etc.

What makes games popular long afterwards is:

1. MP play - Ladders, discussions of strategy, tournaments, teams, the more serious the better.

2. Expansion - Mods, Scenarios, what originally made apolyton great (or so I have heard).

Because so many people play SP, the second point will need a bit of focus.
