  • Ben,

    Ah, well then you're forgiven

If/when you *do* upgrade your, um, hardware, definitely check out CIV.

    • Consistently better comms and stronger management planning are key elements alongside the content based issues people have raised. More extensive discussions are:

I've had intermittent success in making these points, but nothing sustained, and to be totally honest I don't think that the senior admins and owner have sufficient appetite to make the necessary changes. More than happy to be proved wrong though.

      Also, restoring post stats.

              • Well I moved here from CFC, admittedly years ago, and only went back for the same reason rah did: to download the latest patch for BtS. I prefer the OT here to theirs, although I do miss some posters: WvO, Flubber and stormerne particularly, although there are some others I haven't named. Ironically, Ming's OT posts were always fun, especially when 'poly posters responded to them.

Why can't we start a GOTM? We had them in the Civ 2 General forum for yonks, although they seem to have died recently (not that I have Civ 2 installed on this machine - just ToT). The Scouse Gits and all the Civ 2 regulars taught me more here than I ever learned at CFC, and I'd love to see that kind of knowledge coming here again. I am 'guilty' of playing a major part in starting the Demo game for Civ 2, and I see that it has become a Frankenstein's monster of sorts, but if many people still enjoy playing them then I'm glad I played some part in its creation.

I feel we need to promote the ladder of high scores a lot more, and get the competitive Civ players (of whom I am sure there are very many) involved here. If we can come top of a Google search for "competitive Civ games" then there won't be any worries about the site's future.

                • seriously, how hard would it be to implement a ladder and leaderboard? it would be a good step to possibly attract people here.

granted, i'm wholly ignorant of such things, but if i could meet polytubbies for a few hours each week and crank out some cIV, i would (even though i'm horrible at it).

I moderated a forum over at CFC (HOF)... and helped moderate another (GOTM)... for a year or two. I hardly think my 2 moderator actions in that timeframe (both simple warnings) qualify me as a NAZI...

There were a couple minor screwups on my part, allowing some discussions to get too combative (even on my part), but most of the problems I was able to "solve" simply by taking the lead in the discussion and directing it away from the problem. In general, proactively setting, or helping to set, the tone of the forum. Cracker, ainwood, and AlanH, the mods I worked with in the GOTM forum, were good at that too.

We had a specific topic. The moderators Thunderfall chose were some of those who were well respected in regards to that subject matter and had the time and dedication to really focus on and promote that subject matter. The rest is pretty easy. It doesn't require being a NAZI... but you do have to have actual rules and be consistent... no special cases when the rules are clearly broken (not even for the moderator).

And don't tell me it's hard to tell when the rules are broken. Those borderline cases aren't the problem cases. It's the clear cut stuff everyone can see like when mods were following EoN around laughing at his ad hominems directed towards most anyone in the CIV forum in the weeks following the release of the game, chuckling about how EoN is a "special case" and the rules don't apply to him. Who in their right mind would take the time to post seriously in such an environment?

For serious discussion on a specific topic, one of those rules has to be address the subject matter and not the poster. Allowing X to post whatever **** they want to in an on-topic forum isn't going to work... because it makes X and whoever they're insulting the subject matter... and I doubt that's going to draw anyone to this site. If you want to go with the flaming as your "topic"... the competition for that audience is intense, with massive and entrenched competitors.

                            • Goes the other way too. If you're posting the kind of stuff that many other people are posting but yours gets deleted, it sends a message that someone doesn't like you. In that case many would leave, but I just fought back the only way I could, the only way the admins left me since they let their site be run by a bully, trolling.
