I think you're missing the significance of the endorsement. There are just over two weeks left in which McCain has a chance to steal the narrative. Powell was probably the biggest endorsement possible, and Obama got it unequivocally. That alone kills two or three days for McCain.

And I have to say that I was moved by his smackdown of Islamophobia.

And how exactly was he going to do so? 538 has Obama with a 93.1% chance of victory... what, Powell's endorsement makes it 93.2%?

That started on Free Republic. My local newspaper's forum is full of trolls who cut and past the latest Free Republic and World Nut Daily threads and they've been saying Powell is just endorsing Obama because he's black. They won't talk about how Powell endorsed Bush in 2000 and 2004.

To be fair, neither Vice President Gore, nor Senator Kerry, were black.

And this is a surprising announcement??? - Why state your positon now Ben? We have all known for some time now, how conservative you are - of course you will vote for McCain, right along with Wiglaf.

I am just confused in your sudden claim Ben (as if it were an actual surprise).

OTOH Obama could use that to claim he does reach across party lines. And considering he has a lot of former Clinton aides helping his campaign the "change" mantra can only be seriously applied against the Bush doctrine.

I also liked Powell's statements wrt Obama being a 'socialist' and taxation in general.

Well, the GOP has added over $5,000,000,000,000 to our national debt with nothing to show for it and expanded the size and power of the federal government like there's no tomorrow....and McCain wants to continue these very same policies that have left us so FUBAR!

For now, I'll take the possibility of efficient, competent government, which is something I think Obama can deliver, over a continuation of the last eight years.

I eagerly await the day that the Republican Party fractures. Surely out of the pieces a new party will form free of the evangelical/religious influence, less stained by corruption, and more willing to present its agenda through well-framed arguments than cheap slogans. Until then, the GOP can rot.

At this point, neither party is conservative. At least Obama is intelligent, has a competent successor in place, and seems determined to get to work.
Some Republican voters are seriously naive if they think that the modern-day Republican party is a small government party.

President Bush is a Republican and he has dramatically expanded the executive powers of the president.

This is moronic. Do you really think McCain is going to expand the federal government more than Obama is with a Reid and Pelosi led Congress that is already talking about their plans for a second New Deal?

                          Goddamn idgit voters...

yeah! vote for the idgit who claims he can balance the budget in four years mainly by cutting taxes, thought there might be a spending freeze, which wouldn't help a damn given that we are already 500 in the hole, and the clear idgits who support him!

I think its being far more of an idgit to think that Obama with a Dem Congress will be spending less than McCain with a Dem Congress.

If you want to claim "competence" that's one thing, but spending wise, I don't think there is a contest.
