Indeed - I don't understand why some on here are assuming that no Obama voters would support Powell in Obama's cabinet.

In that respect, I'm in same boat with Zkrib and Wittlich.

Because he was in the Bush cabinet that was there when the Iraq War started. Hard to campaign for change and against the Iraq War and then bring Colin Powell into your cabinet.

What I liked was that Powell was the first national political figure I have seen to tackle the "Obama is a secret Muslim" line and ask the simple question: So ****ing what? Even if he were Muslim, that should not be an issue. Until today I had only heard columinst like Kristoff in the Times make that simple yet necessary point.

Sometimes I think that the media thinks it's running for president.

Right. As long as they check Obama at the White House door for a bomb belt it shouldn't be an issue.

Every president should wear a bomb belt as a last resort.

Conservative commentators are already saying the only reason Powell's doing this is because he's black.

What else are they going to say: "Powell's endorcing Obama because Obama's the best candidate."

I should announce that I am formally endorsing McCain.

At this point, neither party is conservative. At least Obama is intelligent, has a competent successor in place, and seems determined to get to work.

Yes, but unlike Powell, you haven't prosecuted any wars, nor have you been interlinked with the higher echelons of the Republican party.

So your endorsement carries about as much weight as Palin's spinal column.

Which is to say, less than 5 pounds.

But I think it actually does Obama more good now than it would have a few months back; it may reassure moderate uncommitteds, which is what has to happen right now.
That's BS, IMO. Powell's endorsement would have had the most positive impact when Obama and McCain were neck and neck, right after the conventions. Now, it's like jumping onto a winning ticket (ie, doesn't really help, the guy is already going to win).
