I agree with this. A Pelosi free from the threat of veto is terrifying.

I find it amusing that people still think of the Republicans as responsible fiscal stewards.

Having said that, I agree it's best to have power split up, and so I am a tad worried about the coming Dem/Dem/Dem situation. Still, I prefer Obama to McCain enough to outweigh that concern.

I don't get the crap about divided government - Reagan had a Democratic congress, and the debt still ballooned, because his administration upped spending and cut taxes. FDR set up the New Deal with a huge Democratic majority, but he was still bringing in fiscally conservative budgets.

Maybe the first one... which was afterwards viewed as a mistake...

The President of the U.S. can neither increase spending nor cut taxes.

To be fair the Democrats were terrified of Reagan at the time.

And divided government would only be a good thing if there weren't serious problems that needed to be addressed. Obama, or McCain for that matter will need the power to effectively address these issues.

He might be refering to how the Republicans controlled the Supreme court and used it to fight additional spending for a while

That's a different issue, as Congress seems willing to surrender de facto warmaking powers to the executive branch. They still maintain firm control over appropriations and taxation, however.

In context, FDR's budgets were incredibly conservative.

Not to who, to what, the Great Depression. There would have naturally been deficits even if he would have done nothing.

And therefore having John McCain as president won't mean **** with a Democratic congress....wait, that isn't your argument, is it???
