I'm pretty sure he is well aware now that he was misled by others in the administration and regretful about the whole thing."The DPRK is still in a state of war with the U.S. It's called a black out." - Che explaining why orbital nightime pictures of NK show few lights. Seriously.

Rufus - Sadly, that is entirely plausible. Unfortunately for Powell he carries the taint from it all (rightly or wrongly). I just see him as such damaged political goods at this point and wonder at why an endorsement from him is so newsworthy.
The casual manner in which he was tossed under the bus by W and company was pretty callous, especially considering his decision to toe the party line and compromise his integrity before the UN on their say-so. Whether he knew the truth or not (and I have always believed the latter), he is still considered a hero, a straight shooter and a clear thinker by many, perhaps most, Americans.
I feel this endorsement is actually quite significant.Apolyton's Grim Reaper 2008, 2010 & 2011

In other news, Obama raised over $150 million dollars in September, with an average contribution of $86. The previous record, set by Obama last month, was $66 million."Beware of the man who works hard to learn something, learns it, and finds himself no wiser than before. I am one of those voters who decided to vote for Obama early on - back when Hilary and the other candidates were still in for contesting the Democratic nomination.
Yet, I have mixed feelings about Powell - I see the strengths that Powell has, and I also see the flaws that Powell has had when he served President Bush. I give Powell props for standing up to Rumsfeld over their differences.A lot of Republicans are not racist, but a lot of racists are Republican.

FWIW, it's not clear that that's true (that he knew it was BS). The Bushie plan from Day 1 was to marginalize the State Department (which they regarded as rife with traitorous liberals -- like me!) and, as much as possible, shift the apparatus of foreign relations over to the Pentagon. Bush and Cheney installed the trusted True Believers at Defense and the NSA; Powell was a sop to the non-neocon, non-fundie wing of the party, and they gave him State precisely because they intended to treat State -- and him -- the way most presidents treat HUD or Labor.
I have no idea to what extent Powell was in the loop, but given what we already know about how this Administration did business (think about what happened at Justice, for example), the idea that they played Powell is utterly plausible. So get your Naomi Klein books and move it or I'll seriously bash your faces in! - Supercitizen to stupid students

Was this news? He was supposed to be supporting him for months... maybe he decided to do it two weeks prior to try to get in for a cabinet position? Maybe he thinks Barack will tag him for SecState again?“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

I suspect Powell waited this long so that the endorsement could look like it was coming after a long, thorough soul-searching. And maybe it did. But I think it actually does Obama more good now than it would have a few months back; it may reassure moderate uncommitteds, which is what has to happen right now."I have as much authority as the pope. To the observant, it was only news in that he finally pulled the trigger. Deciding to do so on Meet The Press, 16 days before the election was designed to maximize the impact. Pretty straightforward.Apolyton's Grim Reaper 2008, 2010 & 2011

Sadly, that could never happen; the wing of the Dems that supported Obama early because of his opposition to the war would never stand for the return of Powell to any position of power. And it's a damned shame.
