  • I don't doubt that Obama is loving it, but, really, would have been much more useful during the convention rather than when Obama already has it won.

    • I remember when there was talk in 2000 about Powell possibly running, but his wife talked him out of it.

Can you consider a wacky alternate history where the first black president is... Republican? I *loved* Gore but I wanted to see him Powell run too. It is always good if ALL the canidates are men of integrity and experience.

I really do not know how to feel about Powell anymore. Before Bush 2, I really, really liked Powell, I may have voted for him if he ran. I do not know if he was tricked or not .

      I R conflicted.

      • Condoleeza Rice would be much bigger news if she endorsed Obama.

          QFMFT!

That being said, I'd take Powell over Obama and McCain over both.

But now, a champion war stategist says Obama's qualified to be commander in chief. Game over.
Leaving them in several thousands debt per person means she has plenty of executive experience for leaving all of America in debt by several more thousand

See the big picture, Imran. That endorsement was held back for when it was needed -- to capture the weekend news cycle and maintain momentum, when the media wanted to talk about the Letterman and SNL appearances of the GOP ticket. Worked like a charm.

              • A lot of what I've read about Letterman and SNL has been mixed.

Sure he can Drake. He uses the bully pulpit to harangue Congressmen into giving into his demands by appealing to public opinion. That's how Reagan got his massive spending increases and tax cuts.

                  • And how Bush financed the Iraq war -- off the books.

As you point out, Congress has all the control over spending and taxation. The President can pressure them all he wants, but Congress doesn't have to do anything they don't want to.

Funding for the Iraq War isn't "off the books" at all. The Congressional supplemental bills that fund the GWOT are a part of the public record.

How about neocon Iraq war promoter and lifelong conservative Republican Ken Adelman?

                        • Sorry; brain fart. Obviously, though, the initial deployment wasn't part of the federal budget.

                          • Yes it was. Supplemental funding for OIF was approved by Congress on April 3, 2003, before U.S. troops even reached Baghdad. Funding before that would've come out of DoD's budget.

Congress also backed the war effort by approving the largest supplemental appropriations bill in U.S. history. On April 3, 2003, both the House and the Senate approved a supplemental funding measure, H.R. 1559 (P.L. 108-11), to provide financing for military operations in Iraq, economic aid for foreign governments, and support for homeland security.

Somehow, I doubt it. I mean, Mitt Romney's right--there are so many more Joes the Plumber, and it's better to have their votes than one Colin Powell.
