2003 lows on the S&P were 768. I would be somewhat surprised if now that we're down this low, we don't test those lows. There's something magical about those types of numbers (just as we had to test the highs last year).

Though I did expect a rally before then, I figured it'd last longer than one day...

I wonder how many more times the government is going to take a major move and the markets panic sell as a result.

To put it in perspective, the bottom of the market in 2002 after 9-11 is still lower then where the Dow is after all has been said and done.

I think it will drop another 2000 or so and settle at about 6000, which is where it was 10 years ago, before all this bubble nonsense.

October is traditionally a bad month. Possibly in November we won't see such big one day drops. However, I think it's possible for the stock market to trend down or level.

                      • October is probably bad because it's the low point in the year for retailers (with the standard Feb 1 start-of-year, October is the end of Q3, which is the quarter with the lowest sales (Aug-Sept-Oct) and the highest inventory purchases relative to sales (as you stock up for Nov). Thus, anyone selling things to consumers has their worst numbers, which affects all areas of the market. Also, spending is down in general because it is usually high in the summer and winter, thus Oct. and Apr. are both bad months (they are the low points right before an uptick).

                        But that's just a guess.

                        • Also, psychology plays a big part. People believe that October will be bad so they prefer other investments.

                            • Yesterday, the most points ever gain in an election day.
                              Today, the most points lost.

                              • Stock markets always go down when a democrat is elected. The fact that it was big was largely due to the run-up, I assume...

You can pretty much sell the Dow short if a democrat is elected...
