  • I think it really depends on how much if at all they think Bush's bailout bill needs to be rewritten. If they think it is OK as is, then the debate as is then the debate should go ahead as scheduled. If they think it still needs work, then the debate should be delayed a bit to allow that to happen.

    • Why? The candidates are just 2 of 100 senators. McCain hasn't cast a vote since April. Obama, probably the same or worse. If they want to show up for work in DC this week, that's fine. But don't kid yourself, everything that both candidates do is more about the campaign than any legislation that might result.

THE CAMPAIGN IS NOT PART THE GOVERNMENT. There is absolutely no reason to "suspend" it, nor to postpone the debate.

And I imagine that the Bush speech did nothing but terrify heretofore ignorant-on-the-situation persons, causing more to move from McCain/undecided to Obama. When Bush admits troubled times, you know things are going pretty bad...
Bush looked exactly like he did when he came on TV and sold the Iraq War using fear and lies. Most people are looking at this like one huge scam. It's create a huge increase in the distrust for the government.

          • Yeah, I'm pretty sure more political rhetoric isn't what's needed at the moment. McCain and Obama should go ahead with their play--er, debate and let people who know what they're talking about discuss the solution. (Though I suppose this excludes most of the other people in Congress too...)

What do McCain or Obama have to do with getting a deal done? Neither of them are on the relevent committees; they have no part of this until the bill gets to the floor. It is a naked political ploy by McCain, plain and simple. Nothing more, nothing less. It is patently obvious with only a moment's thought, which makes it unlikely that most American's will figure it out, being as we are the most intellectual lazy people on Earth.

What's more, McCain's suggestion to move the debate to the night of the VP debate, essentially cancelling the VP debate, is another obvious ploy to protect Palin.

              This **** is just maddening.

McCain is the de facto leader of the Republican Party. Most Republicans aren't all that happy with Bush's plan. And they don't want to pass a bill that their nominee is going to rail against on the campaign trail. That'd hurt THEM in their Senate or House races. Basically, the Party reps would like to have McCain's stamp of approval on the final bill.

                  • He can't do this on the campaign trail?

I guess we shouldn't expect him to know how to use modern technologies such as the teleconference, video conferencing, or paper on an aeroplane.

Wait, I thought McCain was a maverick.

And you are seriously saying no other republican "leader" can step up?

So you're saying yes, it is clearly a political motivation - not just for McCain, but for all the GOP candidates.

                        • Anyway, McCain has already made it clear what kind of bailout he would like. So that doesn't even work.

I think McCain will show. I doubt he's afraid of debating, since his style of debate is much more telegenic than Obama's. Obama's the better speaker, but if McCain can put him on the defensive his 1-line attack style should win him the 1st debate (assuming Obama hasn't changed his style since the Rick Warren debate).

Delaying will only hurt whatever points he can gain in the long run.
