The Canadian Federal Election will probably be October 14th

This town expected things would get harsh after 2010, when the last of the beetlewood was done. Seeing it come two years early, just means our preparation will hopefully pay off.

It is one thing to live in a depressed area and depend on a depressed sector when the rest of the country and other sectors are doing well.
It is quite another when there is severe economic dislocation that affects everywhere, all at once, for a prolonged period of time.

Prince George is a net producer despite the depressed market prices. We've always been so.

Where is there to cut? We are already to the bone, NYE. The folks who are still left are going to tough it out.
The real folks you should be concerned about are the Vancouverites sitting on 800k houses. We'll do just fine.

Layton just accused Harper as trying to censor the opposition with his $30M arts cuts. Wow.
The NDP have joined the Liberals in the "pathetically desperate" pile.

Because true freedom is a value Canadians hold dearly. While I hate high taxes, I hate repressive authoritarians most. Most Canadians are aligned with that, which is why the Reform party failed. Get over it. Seriously.

With 2 parties on the left, the Bloc, and the Liberals, what is majority territory for Harper?
He made a very big gaff tonight regarding people are concerned with the stock market, but not so much with losing homes and jobs. I bet you a lot we'll see that in more than one commercial coming home.
I wonder when the Tories start punching? I'd bet it is tomorrow morning, now that they can talk directly and not have to contend with a poorly moderated couple of forums.

Smart money says Harper leaves May alone the rest of the way. Every vote she gains comes from Layton or Dion. Heck, I'd look for ways to give her a little cash.
Same thing goes for Jack. If we wake up after the election, and Jack is the leader of the opposition, it is likely in a majority parliament and guess who is in the majority.
The focus is going to be on Dion and Duceppe, and the battlegrounds are going to be urban Ontario and Quebec.
Prepare for some screams from people like Ben, and me. Perhaps for different reasons.

It was a gaffe-- I think I know what he was trying to say-- that the US crises they were discussing hasn't cost canadians houses or jobs yet but it is hurting Canadian investors with the stock crashes-- BUT thats not how it will play -- Instead he gave the opposition a big quote to play again and again and again

WEll it was a different type of debate-- It often seemed like it was a team of four against one-- If Harper had been allowed to speak every time someone addressed him, he would have been speaking half the time.
But that jobs quote will; likely haunt him even though on other occasions he talked about job creation being a top priority. It is a MAJOR mistake to give the opposition such a quote-- You would think that he would know better than to provide such a sound bite-- Its like that old one of Dion "I would increase the tax"-- they play that again and again with no context whatsoever.

My God you don't read french speaking newspaper, watch french speaking television.
Each day, Le Devoir (my roommates subscribed to this newspaper) published many opinions texts from well known artist criticizing Harper for his cut in the culture subsidize. The editorial team was also very virulent(each day, at least one text against Harper). For having read frequently La Presse it was also the same thing from many reporter (I don't know the english word for Chroniqueur).
Amusing argument. Is it any surprise that an independently-run newspaper, along with educated columnists would be against cuts in culture?
If you want to talk about propaganda, then think about audience, instead of accusing a newspaper such as Le Devoir (which has the smallest readership of all dailies in Quebec). What has popular talk radio been saying?
And FWIW, I've seen plenty of published opinions (both in Le Devoir and La Presse) expressing consent with the cuts. What's the best argument I've heard from them? "Artists are spoiled children".
Yes indeed, "spoiled children" earning on average 18k$ a year.
I heard many stupid arguments (few of them were making sense). One of their last arguments was that the artists are representing the Quebeckers culture; and so Harper attacked the Quebec souls by cutting 30M$ subsidy to culture. That's what I call propaganda... And it seems that it worked...
If artists do not represent our culture, who does? Mechanics? Lawyers?
The only part where I'd agree with you is when you criticize the claim that the cultural cuts are Harper's direct jab at Quebec. It reminds me of Asher and NYE's paranoia crisis about the Liberals' agenda against Alberta.
Wow, people in a gala made by artists for the artistic community complained about the cuts.
Again, did you watch TQS? did you listen to talk radio?
Really the debate on culture become a disproportionate issue and that's for 30M$. Each day of the last two week; the artist supported by the mainstream medias attacked Harper on each front. (Even when the ADQ was strong during the last election, I never heard so much irrationnal attack)
It's the other way around. Suppressing 40m$ of help (when you're running a surplus of several billions) to a group that makes on average 18k$/year is disproportionate.
I would also like to say; that the "meme" Haper = Bush, began to be said by the artist 2-3 weeks ago, and become utilized by Duceppe and Dion lastly.
Which, sadly for you, is true. Toning down his discourse in order to get electable doesn't change his personal background, history, and fundamental beliefs.
