After the age of 18 you'd take some sort of test (the rite of passage, more or less) and if you pass you're considered an adult for these things. If not either keep trying or wait until 21.
What about some orgy with lots of nakked people and booze as 'rite of adulthood'?

In Scotland, there's a plan to raise the age of alcohol purchase in shops to 21, kinda like the situation in America. I think it's a dreadful piece of authoritarian legislation. Infantilising young adults won't do a damn bit of good in fighting binge drinking.

When you turn 18 you have to work just like every other citizen. At least I did. It's just wrong not to let 18 year olds have all the rights everyone else does in a society where they have to support themselves and pay their taxes.

Do you have a sister? An aunt?
No sisters, but I do have an aunt who's single.

Having known a lot of very intelligent 21-year-olds from the college I went to, I can safely say that they were no more mature at 21 than when they were at 18.

If anything, at 21, they were legally able to get away with more stupid **** that they shouldn't have done.

Lowering the age won't fix the problem, but it would decriminalize something that shouldn't be criminalized in the first place.

In any event, the fact that we have a higher DD rate than the UK even with 21 is an argument for why it should be 21 here - obviously we can't handle our booze properly. I don't believe the 21 drinking age has anything to do with the reason for our DD rate being so high...
So you effectively want to bring back prohibition? Are you aware of the havoc that caused in the 1920s? Or do you enjoy ignorance?

It should not be within the government's power to limit access to intoxicants, of any nature. Personal responsibility!

I've already lectured in this very thread that Quebec is its own nation.
