How dare Russia attack another country. Only the United States is allowed to attack other countries!

The Cold War is not back. Russia's just tired of being pushed around.

We're in alot better position now however. The Sovs were 72 hours from the Rhine. The only way they get anywhere near the Rhine this go round is if NATO keeps giving away countries.
The Russians remain 20 minutes from New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, just about any other place they want to turn into glass.

And they do not have as stable a leadership.

Is this really a road you want to go down?

Incidentally, did NATO throw Hungary away? Czechoslovakia?

        Perhaps.

Did the Soviets throw Cuba away? Nicaragua?

        Perhaps.

We're all still here. If it's to be another Cold War, best we relearn the play book that kept most of us alive, real quick.

No! I don't want to go down this road. Why do you think that? Sometimes you just gotta do what you just gotta do. Regarding Russian nukes, that hasn't changed much. The leadership of the Soviet Union being more stable? You're joking right?

No, fear not. We've been down this road before and like I said, we can handle it. We have no choice do we? Russian tanks are rolling.

Actually all my thinking is predicated on the Russians finishing Georgia, ending democracy there. If that happens, we have to go to school on it. It's not a choice.

Modern man calls walking more quickly in the same direction down the same road “change.”
The world, in the last three hundred years, has not changed except in that sense.

So, losing two wars simultaneously isn't good enough for you? You want our cities to get glassed?

We can't put a Carrier in the Black Sea. A sub or 2 would have to go with it. They would need Turkey permission to do so.
Do you think Turkey wants a border with Russia again?

I don't think they are very happy about having Russian tanks so close to them. I don't think it would be an issue if the Americans chose to do that in the Black sea.

I heard Dick Morris say tonight, that Bush should call Putin up and tell him that Ukraine will be in NATO a week from now if you don't stop the war today.
That would be an excellent idea. The Ukraine has already said that they will strand the Black Sea fleet if the Russians don't withdraw.

                        No, I'm not.

The Soviets were quite rational, and had distributed power for most of the Cold War.

Nobody after Stalin had the power that Putin has today. Stalin was gone before the Soviets really had the ability to destroy the world. Putin has both the power of oblivion and the lack of checks on his power.

Putin is leading a neo-nationalist state. They've done Versaille, without the treaty, and many Russians are just as pissed off, and as open to being led by the nose as any citizen of Weimar Germany. This, and a nuclear arsenal of an intercontinental variety is a very dangerous combination.

We have lots of choices. Blind reaction and charging off into the valley, or colder calculation would be a good place to start.

We disagree. IMO, you have to be tough with these guys. NATO went the other way by not allowing Georgia and the Ukraine in, and you see what happened. Still, whatever, I respect your opinion.

The fact that those countries were on track to join NATO is part of the reason Russia's doing this. We're completely surrounding them and they feel penned in. If they don't act now to resolve the situation, they won't have the chance for decades. This is what happens when you play tough guy and back them into a corner.

How much success would Mexcio have in being tough with GW Bush?

You propose that NATO play tough with Putin in Russia's back yard.

The Russians don't have to take that ****. They hold all the cards over Europe. The only card left is force.

Ask yourself what the American reaction to the Russians using force where vital interests existed would be.

Penning in the fascists, the REAL ones, is a good idea. You guys can talk **** about the US all you want, we're leaving Iraq. Do you think if they finish taking it the Russians will be leaving Georgia anytime soon?

Thats ok though. Thankfully policy isn't made at Poly. Enjoy your freedom of speach.
