I don't see anything wrong with trying to hand those things out.
Right Ben, because when stopped by a heavily armed individual at a checkpoint, you are likely to feel free to refuse to take something they thrust upon you.

There is this crazy thing in this country called "separation of church and state", so it's wrong there....and it's wrong because it's an attempt to impose another religion on the people we're suppose to be helping.
Neither of which prohibits what was going on here. Sure it can be considered imprudent, and I would agree with you there, and I would agree that the Marines ought to give him a few demerits for this, but that should be the extent of the sanctions.
There's a difference between a criminal act and a socially awkward one, this one is the latter.

The term money implies some form of currency officially backed by someone. The coins the Marine handed out were not money.
Point taken. I change my statement to 'Yeah, this silly "handing out silver coins hoping that someone gets christanized by reading verses" stuff is just bull. It was much more fun when both sides tried to force convert others ' then

And why is handing out coins forcing people to convert? Sorry I don't see it.
Now if we did as the folks in Islam do and start chopping off heads and burning Mosques, then sure.

See, that's where you're wrong. New rules of the day make chopping off heads of non-combatants acceptable.
This coin thing though, well, that's way over the line for acceptable behavior.

That charge would be bull****. Just charge him with breaking general order #1 which, at least in the army, is a huge multipage catch all order which forbids just about everything in Iraq including prostilizing.

Then hand him a demerit.

Bull****. The guy is in UNIFORM, with UNITED STATES MARINES written on it, handing out religious memorabilia.
Sure it can be considered imprudent, and I would agree with you there, and I would agree that the Marines ought to give him a few demerits for this, but that should be the extent of the sanctions.

This is a criminal act, under the UCMJ. And it should be treated as such. And this is more than "socially awkward". Socially awkward would be puking on the Prime Minister of Japan. This is forcing ones religious views on others while giving the appearance that the US Military is backing it.

I'm consitently stupid- Japher I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned
