  • Ben - I presume you have heard about Ezra Levant and the HRC?

Edit - For the benefit of those that don't know (and to provoke a little more debate...)

Ezra Levant is the former publisher of a western Canadian Newspaper, The Western Standard (now defunct). Levant ran the Mohamed cartoons in his paper. A complaint was lodged with the Alberta Human Rights Commission and Levant was compelled to appear before this body and defend himself.

A more complete telling of the story can be found at www.ezralevant.com .

Here are three clips from the hearing before the AHRC.

The first is his opening statement.

The second he describes as "being asked about possible thought crimes"

And the third he calls "a slip of the tongue by my interrogator"

I think people should be able to insult Islam just as they do Christianity. Why can we have a "Piss Christ" but not a "Piss Muhammed"?

Why is one "racist" while the other is an "enlightened expression?"
I don't have a problem with criticising either one. The cartoons in question seem in very poor taste to me. Intelligent criticism would be something else. The creators appear bigoted, hatefull and stupid to me.

Because when it's a minority it's oppressive. When you are criticising the establishment that is something totally different.

          BS.
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

Ehrm, why do you consider it oppressive if a minority are treated in the same way as every other part of a society is ?

Minorities are not treated the same way.

Know him? I used to work for him!

Thanks for putting these up. I'm sure Kidicious would agree that the producers of "Piss Christ" are hateful and bigoted.

Yes, I agree. Although I do not agree with the man in Wezil's vidoes.

It is hard to believe without actually seeing it. He makes a strong argument for free speech in his defence. What he said/published wasn't criminal (his complainant tried to go the police route and was politely told to shove off).

Alright Kid. I'll give you your argument.

What did you disagree with in particular?

I think there is a good argument to be made that those cartoons are not satire, as they have no other value than to demean the followers of a certain religion. Satire has a certain intent.

I think he was hiding behind the idea of free speech. The justification for free speech is human rights. He was saying that it was ironic that a organization whose purpose is to protect human rights was "interogating" him.

I think he's a racist who is exploiting our system.

                              • Sorry, missed your reply.

                                That's fine.

I think these folks should be free to show their art without being hauled fined and sued in front of a tribunal.
