    Then it´s O.K.,
it sounded as if he would want to generalize it upon christianity as a whole, USian as well as non USian

I'd be willing to bet that "protestant fundamentalism" is the exception in the US as well -- it just happens to be a very vocal, well-organized, highly publicized minority. Like Strangelove was trying to say above -- Pat Robertson and the 700 club don't really reflect the attitudes of most Christians. My mom's church had an open dialogue/debate regarding what their official policy should be toward homosexuality -- there were stong supporters of equal rights for homosexuality amongst the church leadership.

I don't think you can break it up into fundamentalist churches and moderate churches. You might think you are in a moderate church, but in actuality most of the congregation has very fundamentalist ideas.

        • True enough, there was certainly enough anti-gay sentiment in my mom's church during the debate-- it got pretty heated, and I would say that she belongs to a very moderate church (anectdote alert!). I'm just saying that ,of the people I know who identify themselves as Christian (Minnesota, lots of pretty mellow folks, lots of Easter and Christmas christians), most are more moderate than what is generally protrayed in the media. The media tends to focus on the very outspoken, far right evangelical churches, the abortion clinic protestors, or the nut-job crazy televangelists like Robertson.

I was just responding to Proteus, as I think all US christians get unfairly lumped in the ultra-right wing group. I'm not trying to enter into your chicken-egg debate with Asher. That's too sticky for me.

              • There's nothing more that can be said here. Kid things religion has no real bearing on opposition to gay marriage in general terms.

The astounding stupidity kind of ends the discussion by itself.

                    • I already had that scripture debate a while ago here. Your grounding there isn't as firm as you seem to believe. As for stats and reasoning, I kinda skipped past your debate with Dr. S. It got boring with you two whining at each other like little kids so I might have missed the stats that you put foward to support you. Your reasoning though seems to consist of your own prejudice against Christians given the little I did read of the exchange between you and Strange though.

There are statistics that say exactly what I'm saying. What I'm saying is in the bible. What the christian leaders preach is consistent with what I am saying.

The only grounds Kid has found is "but no people are anti-gay cause of Christianity, they were already". Which is a stunning argument.

And as for your "scripture debate" -- everyone knows the bible is full of bull****, nonsense, and generic rhetoric that people have picked and chosen what to believe over the years. It's one reason I'm not Christian -- Christians have shown not to have any firm idea what the hell they are talking about, so it changes depending on what the social climate of the day calls for. It's a sign of tremendous stupidity on a massive level, really.

                        • I didn't really want to get into debate, but I see one has been going on for quite some time.

In any case, I think that there has been some things which have been constant in Christianity over the years. Look in the direction of that if you want to know what Christianity is about, not what changes depending on the culture of the time.
