Nope. Pres. Polk did a deal with them. They formed the Mormon Battalion to protect California from the Mexicans during the U.S. war with Mexico, and in exhcnage Polk let them settle in Utah.Originally posted by Seeker

As for Vermont, Wikipedia describes how it was a disputed territory between New Hampshire and New York. After the Revolutionary War, it declared its independence
but later, joined the United States as our fourteenth state
