useless for modern warfare. You seemed to have overlooked that part.

But then I suppose it depends on what you consider modern. I personally don't think bombing sheep herders to be a prime example.

I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

Yeah, postures like that get you incidents like this.

And even though in this case it wasn't a civilian ship, the 60 crewmembers of the ship are innocent people too. Outside of wartime, their deaths should be mourned (and more to the point, avoided) as much as civilians'.

That's exactly my point. Modern warfare is not between modern nations.

Why? The US does the same kind of thing all the time? And Russian also fly their bombers over ships. It's games.

When did that start attacking our ships?

As an intelligent poster on CFC said, "I could make a layup run against Shaq while he is reading his paper at the bus stop, that speaks nothing of me being able to do the same on the court at game time."

For the arm chair generals here, when a ship is transiting in condition III streaming, in open water, in peace time, in an area with no realistic threat (read everywhere except NK and 5th fleet), during a normal transit it would be odd if the ships were looking for submarine threats at all. Why would we?

During Atlantic transits we didn't man sonar for ASW at all, just one dude to make sure the dome wasn't flooding and to watch for navigation hazards.

This is just one big PR stunt that is only a PR stunt because most people have a video game understanding about real world military operations.

But, food for thought, assuming we did detect a Chinese submarine transiting international waters near our battlegroup, what could we have done about it anyway? Sink it? Do you guys realize that Iranian P3s buzz our warships everyday in the Gulf? Sure we could shoot them down, but what right do we have to do so in international air/sea space?FACT. We are not at war with China or Iran, they can come as close to us as they want while following normal maritime rules of the road.

And if we did detect it, why would we tell anyone and let China know we can see their submarines at will? Not saying thats what happens, but think about it.

Same for China. If China really had pulled off something as amazing as defeating a fully operating ASW screen why would they reveal this extremely advantageous capability to their enemy?

Cheap PR stunt, nothing special. It is interesting to note who jumped on it though to their shame.

"The DPRK is still in a state of war with the U.S. It's called a black out." - Che explaining why orbital nightime pictures of NK show few lights. Seriously.
