I will cease trying to explain to you what polite behaviour is in this context.
Are you saying the holocaust denier shouldnt have been invited?

Doen't matter to me quite frankly. As I say, ask him the tough questions during the question/answer and he would look silly enough.
But to invite him, knowing who he is, then proceed to insult him during the introduction is just classless.

I dont think Ahmahdinajad has a leg to stand on complainging about "rudeness".
Bollinger took heat for inviting him. He promised to ask tough questions, and he did. Bollinger
It was the intro LotM, the intro.

Ive never invited a holocaust denier into my home. Or a 9/11 conspiracy theorist. But then my home isnt a university devoted to the debate of controversial issues.
Fair enough. I wouldn't either. I find their views odious and I have no need for the debate in my home.

Well it does matter. You invite someone like that, and his known opinions and rhetoric and actions are the elephant in the room (This in Columbia U, a univ that IIUC has historically had lots of holocaust survivors and children of survivors in its student body, and some in its faculty). You can't ignore them in your introduction. The only alternative I can see is to not invite him at all.

well then unless youre suggesting Bollinger shouldnt have invited him, your comparison to what you would have done in your own home is irrelevant.

I'm sorry but I could introduce most anyone w/o being insulting and rude.

Granted my "home" is not a "school". All the more reason for the host to be respectful, no?

No, I dont think that works.

I could ignore the elephant in the room too. I would hold that to be far worse rudeness in this case.

Why not? Better to attack during the intro when he can't even try to defend himself? That's fair.

Dammit, you seem to think the introduction was the only time you would get to shine some light on matters. There was a question and answer period!!!

How about "This is Mr. Stalin, who has accepted our invitation to speak to this audience. As you know, Mr. Stalin has made some rather controversial statements that I intend to ask him about at the appropriate time. I would ask that you hold your comments for the Q and A period as well."
Wow, that was shockingly hard.

Would that have been so bad? At least it would not have opened the university (and quite frankly given the applause Straightjacket got from the student body we can throw them in as well) up to charges of rank hypocrisy over its handling of the Minute Men fiasco and kicking the ROTC off campus.
