This isnt a game. Its a university. Its a university, that, for some reason, has invited a man to speak who organized a conference to deny a well known historical truth, a historical truth at the core of modern history. To introduce the man, without contesting his opinions from the get go would be to give some legitimacy, however small, to holocaust denial.

That would be to the enduring shame of Columbia University.

Quite frankly I am saddened by LotM's comments in this thread. I usually see him as a thoughtful, considerate and fair poster. In this case it seems absolute hatred for Mr. denier has shut down those admirable traits.

        Wow, that was shockingly hard.
not hard, at all, but absurd on its face.

How so? He behaved exactly as someone in an academic setting should behave. He was polite. He didn't stoop to the level of Bollinger, with petty insults.

I'm guessing you never went to a proper college. Let me explain the rules for these sorts of events. Someone always has to introduce the speaker. If the person introducing likes the speaker, they will effusively praise him or her and his or her achievements. If they have a neutral opinion regarding the speaker, they will simply introduce him or her and say who they are, and leave it at that. If they really don't like the speaker, they will introduce him or her by name, and then say something like "a proponent of some very controversial claims, regarding X, Y, Z, that I hope the speaker will address at this event.

You do not ever get up and say: "He's evil. He's a ****bag. He's disgusting. He's stupid.", even if you firmly believe that. It is simply not done in the academy. It's outrageous and disgusting behaviour, and inimical to the insitution of the university.

Bollinger took heat for inviting him. He promised to ask tough questions, and he did. Bollinger
Bollinger is a coward. What's more likely is that the Zionist mafia put the wind up him and he decided that he had to do something in order to prevent himself being made a sacrificial lamb. And he called ADJ a dictator, which demonstrates that he doesn't understand what that English word means.

And as I thought, the American press were too dumb to understand ADJ's speech. He was giving a quick account of the Islamic view of knowledge and science, which I found fascinating, and I wish he had been questioned on it. According to some US press outlets, this was "rambling about God and science". Perhaps if we wanted to understand the Islamic view on the the ethics of nuclear weapons, we would have actually listened as it was explained to us, instead of falling asleep at the mere mention of something that required actual thought to understand.

And he's being accused of claiming that holocaust studies is like physics, which completely misinterprets his comment (they are alike, as are all disciplines, in that new ideas are continually introduced and old ones dispensed with).

The American media are ****ing thick. Well... what do you expect... look at where they come from.

In the case of holocaust deniers (and thats not all Ahmahdinajad is IMO) and some related circumstances fairness doesnt look like what fairness looks like in other instances.

That is my thoughtful, considered opinion.

He is a thoughtful, considerate and fair poster, except concerning anything to do with criticism of Jews or Israel (just or no), at which point you're just another goy.

I have had many interesting discussions with folks here who have criticized Israel, as many here can attest.

AFAIK, none have expressed the views wrt to the holocaust that Ahmadinajad has.

                        • I don't see why it is necessary to insult the audience by telling them, in advance, what an evil scumbag someone is, when his opinions are well-known.

These are not six-year olds in the audience, I take it.

from the audience reaction, I dont get the impression they thought Bollinger was insulting them.

You know full well that there are places in the world where the story will be "Ahmadinajad spoke at a great US university, his opinions couldnt be that far out of the mainstream" Thats what Bollinger had to preempts. Whether you consider that audience 6 yos, or not, I dont know.
