    The problem is that to have even a "good" run, you need a few hundred feet of vertical drop. . .. lets say 100 would suffice -- So you would need the equivalent of a 10 story building!! Expensive!!

          Take one of the many daily flights between Dallas and Calgary, then go skiing.

            Unless you do it in an abandoned quarry, as is the case with an indoor slope under construction in Belgium. The complex should feature 25 acres of ski-able snow for a cost of €86 million. The longest track would be 800 meters.

              pretty much.

              Though I think "pay for proximity" doesnt quite capture it.

              The lift ticket is a pretty small part of the cost of skiing, when you have to pay air fair, room and board, etc. Hard to explain the relative prices for lift tickets between say, Utah or Alberta, and say North Carolina or north eastern Pennsylvania. Heck,IIRC. between northern W Va (close to DC) and southern West Va (farther from DC). IIRC, the resorts farther from Denver in Colo are better deals, to be competitive.

              So distance is definitely a factor in lift ticket pricing. And its obviously what drives the economics of a indoor ski hill in Dubai, or Belgium, or Dallas. Dont expect to find such a thing in Denver, or Calgary, or even Montreal or Pittsburgh.

                    Very cool. It would be nice to ski during the summer, but I thought it was more a winter thing down there. Up here you can't ski during the summer and the resorts just shut down from March to October.

                      How do you arrive at that conclusion?
                      I guess the same could be said for anything? Wave pools, away from the ocean or other water.
                      Amusement parks. Who the Hell needs those around?
                      If it's not natural, forget it? Does that go for processing chocolate? You can't pick it off a bush, so why bother?

                          Very good, young man. Now tell me how much that will cost? For just the ticket alone? Plus parking at the airport in Dallas? (We will assume travel Calgary airport to Alberta resort vs Dallas home to Forth Worth Ski place is a wash, though I doubt thats actually true)

                          And for now we'll assume you can make it home that night, so you dont have to pay for lodging at the ski resort.

                                As I said before, I can't see it being economical. No wonder americans use more energy than the rest of the world. Air conditioning a building of that size won't be cheap.

                                First of all, texas is flat. Though perhaps they might be building on a hill. They could import some dirt, but unlikely it would be strong enough to support the building structure. So that means they may have to use steel to build a "ramp". Very expensive. And it's unlikely this ramp will have much slope.

                                Even a 10 story building seems kind of weak. You really need 100 stories to make it fun. Granted, I know nothing about skiing as I have never been.

                                This thing costs close to $1 billion dollars. Not including overhead. Utility costs will be astronomical, even if they do recycle the water.

                                Who in the hell is going to pay top dollar for a crappy slope? I can see it working in Dubai because they are very far away from snow, and many people in that region have never seen snow. Or touched it.

                                The one in Belgium seems riskier. As they aren't that far from snow.

                                I think people would just rather wait till winter when they can do real skiing, not this cheesy bunny slope stuff.
